Application Paper 1:

Using Sociological Concepts to Understand Our Lives

(5-6 pages, double-spaced, Times NR, 12 font) Using the variety of concepts learned from weeks 1-7, reflect on the role gender identity has played in your upbringing; in shaping your personal habits, preferences, and choices; and in your professional outcomes and experiences (e.g. in college or in the workplace). Step 1: A list of main concepts has been provided with this assignment. Identify the concepts you want to use. Every time you use a new concept in your paper for the first time, please print the word in bold. When you write the paper, you can discuss each of these in details. There is no minimum or maximum number recommended. Any number of concepts you use has to be explained well and applied appropriately with supporting examples. Step 2: For each concept, in a few sentences first explain what it is. For this part, you may refer to the textbook and either quote from the textbook (give citation) or write in your own words. Then, apply the concepts to your life, telling us about the role they have played in your upbringing; in shaping your personal habits, preferences, and choices; and in your professional outcomes and experiences. You can discuss the actions and reactions of yourself, your family, friends and social networks, and of institutions in which you have participated (examples, family, school, sorority or fraternity, religious institutions, workplace, etc.). Step 3: Put the final draft of the paper together. In the introductory paragraph, make a clear argument about the influence gender has had on your life. For example, you may argue that gender has had a tremendous influence in shaping who you are and in allowing or restricting you to make certain choices and actions; it has had a mild influence shaping your identity but has not really restricted you in anyway; it has imposed upon you social frameworks that you have had to challenge and overthrow as you have carved your own non-conforming gender identity; its has been more prominent in your professional life than your family life or the opposite. In the body of the paper discuss the concepts and their application to your life. In the concluding paragraph, reflect on the future life you are planning and how you see gender influencing those choices and outcomes and if you anticipate facing challenges and how you plan to resist and push for change.
