APA Resources (T.Loney, Rev. 4/21/07)

The following are APA resources I have found particularly helpful:

1. APA Style.org ( www.apastyle.org/ ) This is the home for the APA Manual. It can be purchased in hard or electronic copies at this site. Information is available on citation format at the site. For Electronic References see “Citations in Text of Electronic Material.”

2. Purdue University ( http://owl.english,purdue.edu ) At this site you will see APA resources and sample papers. You can also link to APA Style from this site. You can also submit your papers for quick review by staff.

3. Diana Hacker ( www.dianahacker.com ) Hacker produces a variety of excellent writing manuals. I particularly like the “Pocket Style Manual.” It covers APA, grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and research. Her website also contains some tips on APA formatting.

4. Russ Dewey, “APA Research Style Crib Sheet,” College of Wooster. ( http://www.wooster.edu/psychology/apa-crib.html ) This is a great summary of APA rules, especially involving electronic and web sources.

5. Lesley University Library ( http://www.lesley.edu/library/guides/citation/apa.html ). I particularly like Nancy Wolf’s piece on “Citing Quotations in Text.”

6. For other useful sources, see your university library or writing center. You can also do a Goggle search: “APA formats.”

Quick Tips on Electronic and Web Resources

1. Reference Page: U.S. Public Health Service. (2000). Report on the surgeon general’s conference. Washington, DC: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Retrieved August 25, 2006, from http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/chilreport.htm

2. In Text: (Do not use URL in body of paper; put on reference list. If author available

include name in lieu of organization; also volume and issue number if available

on reference page)

(U.S. Public Health Service, 2000, p. 25)

(U.S. Public Health Service, 2000, chap. 3)

(U.S Public Health Service, 2000, ¶ 5) No page. Use paragraph #

(U.S. Public Health Service, 2000, Conclusion section, para. 1)

“The U.S. Public Health Service Report (2000, ¶ 5) indicates that…”

Other suggestions on In-Text citations:

1…Indirect cite: The major problem seems to be that parents are not

considering what children want (Kehr, 2000).

2. Cite with quotes: “These parents expect perfection from their children, the

coaches and referees” (Sachs, 2000, p. 62).

3. Cite with name and year in text: Loney (2007) disagrees with many of the

the prevailing definitions of leadership (p. 10).

4..Block quotations: Loney (2007) reports on the prevailing definitions:

Dr. Loney says that leadership is different from

Management and that we should take this into

Account in our leadership development. (p. 10)
