Citations in a paragraph

Pages 174-175

3 options:

Cite each sentence

Just like it sounds-each sentence cited that is not your ideas

Introduce the citation at the beginning of a paragraph

A continuation

12

Introducing the Citation at the Beginning of a Paragraph

When the entire paragraph is from one source, you can introduce the author at the beginning by stating that you will be referring/using this source the entire paragraph.

Example,

Adair County’s climate varies from season to season. National Climatic Data Center (2013) provides the following data in this paragraph. The average temperature in Adair County is 66.6 degrees Fahrenheit. During the summer months the temperature averages between 86-90 degrees Fahrenheit with relative humidity ranging 64-87%. The average precipitation is 53.6 inches. Winter months provide an average of 3.5 inches of snowfall with rare snow accumulation lasting more than one week. Although, precipitation is distributed throughout the changing seasons, the spring season is defined as wet and the fall season is considered dry. During late spring and summer, thunderstorms produces heavy winds, lightning, and possible flooding.

**Note this should only be done 1-2 times in a paper because it is becomes awkward to the reader.

13

Continuation

Same paragraph, same reference

**Note this should also only be done 1-2 times in a paper because it is redundant.

Community Health Nursing is fun (Loy, 2015). The author states that Gerontological Nursing is also fun. Further, the author goes on to state that learning APA format is exciting.

14

In-text Citations

If you are using the name of the author as part of the narrative the first time you use it, then you must use the author and date in all the following parenthetical citations OR you could use the author’s name in the narrative without the date.

According to Loy (2015), Community Health Nursing is fun. Gerontological nursing is also fun (Loy, 2015). Loy further states that learning about APA format is exciting.

15

More In-text Citation

If you use the parenthetical form first in the paragraph, you must include the year in all subsequent citations in the paragraph.

Community Health Nursing is fun (Loy, 2015). Gerontological nursing is also fun (Loy, 2015). Loy (2015) further states that learning about APA format is exciting.

Note this is an example of paraphrasing and not direct quote.

16

Direct Quotes

Cite page number with author and date (p.)

If page number is not available then use paragraph number (para.)

Examples:

Loy (2015, p. 12) states “Community nursing is exciting”.

“Community nursing is exciting” (Loy, 2015, p.12).

Direct Quotes >40 words

Block style format, free standing, no quotation marks-page 171

Pages 170-173

17

Personal Communication

Page 179

Source’s first and second (if available) initial with last name, personal communication, date

NOT included on the reference page because it not recoverable material.

Example

Nursing provides diverse opportunities (N.L. Loy, personal communication, March 17, 2015).

18

Reference Page Format

Page 37 and 180

Separate page from the body of the paper

References

Entries are double spaced

First line flush left, then hanging indent format

Includes references used in the paper

References provide recoverable data

Do NOT include personal communications on reference list (in-text only)

19

You will have to ignore the editing comments on this page because of the way I have my settings set. I have the paper set to notify me of sentences without 2 spaces after periods. However, with the reference page, this is not what is needed; only 1 space after the periods for APA reference page.

20

References

Period after each element

Single spaced after each element

Capital letters for first word, proper nouns, and after a colon

Tips

Best to use primary sources

If you find data/information you want to use but the information was obtained from another source, then go to primary source. Be sure the information was conveyed accurately.

**You still need your APA book to ensure*****

30

How to find Creditable Sources

Look at the about section at the bottom of the website.

The site generally tells if the information is to be used at your own risk.

Examples of poor resources-in other words do NOT use

Wikipedia-any one can submit and write on this website

City-data.com

.com websites should be questioned

31

32

How do I find an author of a website?

33

34

Avoid Plagiarism

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkpwFpMYShY

Direct quotes-(the more you use the less I believe you are critically thinking). Direct quotes should be a minimum.

35

Other Tips

Use of abbreviations (p. 109-111)

You need to spell out before you use the abbreviation. Use abbreviation only if you need to and are going to use > 3 times. See underuse page 107

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)……….

Avoid using abbreviation at the beginning of a sentence.

36

Other Tips

Numbers (111-114)

General rule:

10 and above can be expressed as numbers

Below 10 express as a word

Starting sentence with a number should also be spelled out

See other uses too.

37

Other tips

Review Chapter 4 Mechanics of style in APA book

Write in a scholarly tone. (Not like you are having a conversation)

Avoid use of I unless it is reflective writing. Instead use the author.

Write in 3rd person.

Avoid Colloquial expressions: https ://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kc7yjQ3WGlw

Before you submit your paper to be graded

1. read it out loud to find errors

2. have someone else read it for proofing

3. Look at what Word has underline in color and correct if needed.
