APA In-Text Citaon DOs & DON'Ts

IN-TEXT CITATION EXAMPLES Below I have provided a few examples of correct in-text citation format. I hope this can help you as you compose your assignments.

EXAMPLE 1: Note that you must always include the year of publication in an in-text citation.

CORRECT: According to Daft (2016), organizational theory research has expanded throughout the 20 century.

INCORRECT (no year of publication was included): According to Daft, organizational theory research has expanded throughout the 20 century.

EXAMPLE 2: Note the year of publication is correct and NOT the page number (unless you are using a direct quote, when using a direct quote you include both the year and the page).

CORRECT: Defining the goals of an organization are important in order to achieve desired outcomes (Daft, 2016).

INCORRECT (no year of publication included, page number was not required): Defining the goals of an organization are important in order to achieve desired outcomes (Daft, p. 17).

EXAMPLE 3: Avoid using direct quotations in your assignments (no more than one or two total, I want you to focus on writing in your own words). When you do use a quote, notice the page number must be included in the in-text citation. The page number comes at the end of the quote and is within the sentence and NOT after the period.

CORRECT: Daft (2016) writes that “organizational goals represent the reason for an organization’s existence” (p. 71).

INCORRECT (citation is outside of the period): Daft (2016) writes that “organizational goals represent the reason for an organization’s existence.” (p. 71)

INCORRECT (page # not at end of quote): Daft (2016, p. 71) writes that “organizational goals represent the reason for an organization’s existence.”

INCORRECT (no page # was included with quote): Daft (2016) writes that “organizational goals represent the reason for an organization’s existence.”
