The purpose of this paper aims to explain how ethical misconduct continues to question the beliefs, values, and morals of the people sworn to protect, serve, and speak on behalf of the nation. According to the Association for Psychological science, estimates show that the cost of corruption equals more than five percent of global gross domestic product (GDP) with over $1 trillion paid in bribes each year.

Ethical misconduct in the military demonstrates a lack of trust in the individual, group, and organization.  Ethical misconduct undermines the Army Values, Warrior Ethos, military and civilian creeds and at times Constitutional Rights. In addition, it impedes the ethical climate of the organization by implying tolerance of ethical misconduct. The stance on holding leaders and mentors accountable for doing what is right hinges on the Profession of Arms and fulfilling the obligation of the Army Values. This ethics paper will discuss the root cause of ethical misconduct through the impact on the force, the three ethical lenses, and possible solutions to the ethical dilemma when people of positional power make unethical decisions.
