Quick Guide to American Psychological Association (APA) Citations Style
Honor code violations such as plagiarism have grave consequences, including denying academic honors, suspension or dismissal from the program. In-text and end-of-text citations as well as proper quotation practice are required in all submitted work. APA citations style must be used in all submissions.
How to cite references inside the text
Include author and date in your text and the full source in the references list.
· Option 1: add the publication date immediately after the author’s name :
Jones (2008) examined the issue across different continents and found similar results.
· Option 2: include the author’s last name and publication date at the end of the paragraph:
Similar results were found across different continents (Jones, 2008).
· Option 3: incorporate the author’s last name and publication date in your text:
In 2008, Jones’s research found that similar results were found across different continents.
How to quote
· Short Quote: Use double “quotation marks” within the sentence:
According to Hogg and Vaughan (2002), “self-esteem is closely associated with social identity" (p. 133) and so feelings of high self-esteem give people a sense of fitting into society.
· Longer Quote: Separate the quote from the text (indent and/or double spacing) and add the page number at the end:
Hogg and Vaughan (2002) suggest the following ways in which aggression can be reduced:
In families, parents can raise more peaceful children by not rewarding acts of violence, by rewarding behavior that is not compatible with violence, and by avoiding the use of punishing behavior themselves. At the interpersonal level... techniques of behavior modification, social skills training, non-aggressive modelling, anger management and assertiveness training have been shown to be effective in teaching people self-control. (p. 477)
