EXPERIMENT 1: MICROSCOPIC SLIDE EXAMINATION OF TISSUE
There are four tissues within the human body: epithelial tissue, connective tissue, nervous tissue, and muscle tissue. Each tissue type has different functions, depending on its unique structural makeup. In this experiment, you will examine a variety of prepared tissue slides. Pay close attention to the similarities and differences that you observe within the different types of tissue.
PROCEDURE
EPITHELIAL TISSUE
1. Open the slide viewer to observe each epithelial tissue image carefully. For each slide, note the size and shape of the
cytoplasm, as well as the presence or absence of cilia, goblet cells, and microvilli.
2. Refer to the Introduction for information to identify the epithelial tissues in the post-lab questions.
CONNECTIVE TISSUE
1. Observe each connective tissue image, noting the similarities and differences. Pay close attention to the cell matrix, spe-
cifically how closely packed or sparse the matrix is. While observing the tissue images, also keep an eye out for mast cells
(dark granules within the cytoplasm).
2. Refer to the Introduction for information to identify the connective tissues in the post-lab questions.
MUSCULAR TISSUE
1. Observe each muscle tissue image, noting the similarities and differences. Pay close attention to the presence of striations,
the shape of the muscle fibers, and the number of nuclei present.
2. Use the annotations provided, and refer to the Introduction for information to identify the muscular tissues in the post-lab
questions.
NERVOUS TISSUE
1. Observe each nervous tissue image. Pay close attention to the cell body, dendrites (processes), axons, and nuclei in the
neurons as well as to the neuroglial cells.
2. Refer to the Introduction for information to identify the nervous tissues shown in the post-lab questions.
