Writing Assignment ANTH 206-‐71, Spring 2021 Instructor: K.R. Thomas Final Written Assignment This writing assignment requires students to demonstrate an understanding of class concepts. The final written assignment should be between 500-‐700 words long (approximately 2-‐3 pages), double spaced, 12pt font. Only word documents will be accepted. No cover page is required. Please Include your name, student number and word count in the header. Each written assignment should include:
1. Proper Spelling, Grammar and Citations You will proofread your written work. Marks will be deducted for grammatical and spelling errors. You shouldn’t need to cite any external sources unless your chosen topic isn’t covered extensively in course content, but you can cite any class resources including my module slides. You are welcome to use any citation style you choose, but be consistent throughout.
2. A Clear cohesive argument! I expect each written assignment to be thorough and well-‐organized. You are required to comply with word limits since it will encourage clarity and conciseness, a hallmark of good academic writing. Ensure you have an introduction with a clear topic, and a conclusion which ties it all together.
3. Use of Course Material and Concepts I expect 3-‐5 connections to concepts or ideas from the course in reference to your chosen topic (provide specific examples of anthropological concepts, theories, arguments, evidence that have been covered in class or text).
4. Originality. What do you want to tell me about the knowledge you have acquired?
Suggested topics I am hoping that there is something you are inspired to explore, because when students are invested in a paper topic, final papers are much more interesting to read. This is why I will require you to meet with me during scheduled office hours to discuss your topic and help you to develop and refine your ideas, if needed. I realize that not everyone is interested in this kind of paper, so I will also offer some suggestions and general ideas for topics below. Specific topics:
• Compare and contrast two assigned films using the anthropological perspective. • Describe the processes of colonization in BC and some of the impacts on First Nations in
British Columbia.
• Outline the way that First Nations relationships with archaeology have changed since contact, giving examples from class sources, but framing it through ideas presented in Muckle (2014).
• Compare and Contrast two class sources which showcase examples of First Nations asserting their Aboriginal Rights.
• Has any of the class material inspired you to look differently at the landscape of the city now known as Vancouver? Explain, with specific details of which sources.
• Write a book review of People of the Saltwater (incorporating the anthropological perspective).
General ideas: (I can help you develop these when you meet with me!)
• Fashion/Art Wear • Filmmaking • Archaeology • First Nations and industrial development • Healthcare • Education
Each film evaluation will be assessed as follows: Introduction/Summary 7 mark Incorporation of class concepts 10 marks Originality 5 marks Grammar/Spelling 5 marks Conclusion 7 marks Office Hours meeting 1 mark Assignment total 35 marks
Reminder: this assignment is worth 35% of your final grade. You should plan to have met with me by March 12, 2021.
It is due by 11:59pm, April 14, 2021. I will deduct 0.5 marks for each day your assignment is late.
