2) Select a source to use for Part I of the paper. You will be using your textbook and the article by Miner for this part of the paper, but for this worksheet, include the source you found through your own research. Review the tutorial on Evaluating sources and enter your reference in the space below.

Reference entry in APA format:

3) Include the reference for Part II that corresponds to the topic you’ve chosen. Copy and paste the reference entry from the table (e.g., if you chose Education, you would use the article by Jonsson for Part II).

Jonsson, R. (2014). Boys' anti-school culture? Narratives and school practices. Anthropology & Education Quarterly, 45 (3), 276-292. Retrieved from the AnthroSource database.

4) Summarize the main points from each of your sources. See this guide for help with summarizing your sources.

Summary of your source for Part I (include one to two paragraphs, totaling at least 300 words). Enter your summary in the space below.

Article - The gender gap may be biological but others blame schools for de-masculinizing the environment to which boys learn in. Due to the academic environment is inhibits boy’s development and identity. These gender inequalities for males in school brought forth studies to better understand the educational shortcomings. The study goes on to show ethnographic studies to document the need for change in the educational gender gap. By teachers strengthening a culture to promote learning gender neutral achievement this could have a high impact on academic success. For everyone involved.

Research that has been provided, it is not all random where children and or teachers are placed in classrooms. Granted this was a limited analysis from one state it goes on to show there is some regression in matching these classrooms up. It took into account the socioeconomically aspect as well as the gender issue. Even when principals were interviewed they stated that some students who had to repeat a grade they are sometimes assigned to a specific classroom. Others have taken parents’ wishes into account when placing children. For the most part the research has shown that the State of Germany was looking more at the gender gap then the placement of children for other reasons. There is a theoretical thought that by bringing gender identity and adolescent culture into account while looking at the educational gender gap they can see the cause and effect of the role of the environmental factors for boy’s underachievement. Boys tend to benefit in a strong academic climate because of their own thoughts about education, they are louder, more active and therefore appear to be underperforming. School context and resources play a role in how boys perform as well as the gender inequality. This has broadened the perspective on what really shapes the environment of our schools.

Chapter 3.2 - There is no scientific evidence that any one racial group is superior to another. When given the same opportunities peoples abilities are the same no matter what race or economic factor you are in. Intelligence testing can be inaccurate if you are testing with limited criteria. It can give you false data if you are not including certain aspects of your information into your data. Like certain variables like languages or social economic status can throw off your data enough to get false IQ scores. Culture is another area in which IQ test questions false-correct answer depending on what the questions are and who they are asking. Chapter 4.6 - Language change has occurred over time and throughout cultures. Borrowing words or phrases has happened and will continue to happen everywhere. You can find dialects in most languages across the world and even within the same geographical area. Surface structure of a language has the same characteristics of other languages but it can have social or political ramifications. In the end it goes right back to education and how we view the intelligence of people.

Article - Just as in our text, the article written by Jonsson also states the same thing, however it is in reference to, gender in education. This article talks more in detail about males failing at school because of the preconceived notion that school is more feminine than masculine. Anti-school culture provides explanations into the gender differences between boys and girls. Academic success can be attained by reversing that feeling that school is a feminine thing and getting more men involved in teaching is one way to reverse that trend.

5) Write a working thesis statement based on your sources. See this example .

Working Thesis Statement:

Language, race, social economic status, and even gender can be deciding factors in your academic success. I will comprise an argument to prove that even though times have changed some things remain the same when it comes to equality.
