Summary of what I have said about presentations today.

1. Using power point or not is up to you. Even if you use power point, as I might ask you a question at the end, you must have a camera on at some point during your presentation.

2. I can ask/call anyone of you to present on November 17th, the first day of the presentations. Be ready. If you think of not attending the class after your presentation, that is your choice but I will ask one question from each topic in the last quiz.

3. Presentations should be around 4 minutes, and do not exceed 4 minutes.

4. I expect you to be able to explain the topic to your classmates. Hence, the content of your presentation and the way you present are important. You determine the content of the presentation so research it from different sources. You lose points if you read from your notes. You lose points if you did lots of copy/pasting; that is, just telling us sentences that you memorized from some webpage/book (a few quotations are allowed). I might ask you one question based on your presentation topic, especially if I am not convinced about your presentation or I need a clarification. These are the main things I take into account when I grade. Hence, you have to prepare for your presentation, rehearse it in front of the mirror and make sure it is around 4 minutes, present it to your friends, siblings, or parents at least five times before November 17. Then ask them whether they understand the topic you are presenting. This is how you earn a good grade.

5. The presentation grades were much higher than the midterms in the past. Some students who did poorly in the midterm got 100 from the presentation and vice versa (although there was a positive correlation between the midterm grade and the presentation grade.)

6. In the past, some students told me they are concerned about the presentations as they are not native English speakers. Being a native English speaker or not does not affect your grade given my past experience.

7. In short, your effort determines your grades. If you think that you will get A+ or 100 without doing your responsibilities, it will probably not happen. Do not choose the "dark side" by not getting prepared even if it calls you. Choose better!

If your midterm score is 45 or less, I strongly recommend you to voluntarily withdraw (VW) from the course. If your score is around 50, you are still at risk of failing so decide accordingly to VW or not.

Midterm Grades are posted. Congratulations to the student who earned 100. Nine students earned 90 or above so this proves to me that the questions asked were appropriate, and time was enough.

Most people missed question 12, " derive the supply curve question", as they have not checked the second order condition, and also did not realize that quantity cannot be negative!

After learning most of the answers on Thursday, if you have specific questions about the midterm (questions you missed etc), you must e-mail to the TA at -- [email protected] -- and he can answer them during his office hour. We can discuss further on Thursday

You have to take the practice exam, not only to practice questions but also to practice how to use Respondus. You are responsible from any technical problems that might arise if you do not practice, which will most likely result in you having less time to work on midterm questions.

You can only use the calculator that comes with Respondus in the exam, you should see it during the practice exam (you cannot use your own calculators). You can use a pen and paper to do calculations in the exam. If Respondus warns you of not looking at the camera, do not get worried. We review the recorded event and check whether there was cheating (though I believe none of you would do that but I will check).

There are 12 questions. You will have 50 minutes to complete the exam. It should be more than enough if you have studied.

I will give you a short practice exam on Tuesday and then on Thursday. You have to draw a graph and take a picture and attach your answer on Tuesday. Please be prepared. I will also ask you to turn on your cameras as I have to monitor you during the exam. Ensure that you have a camera while taking the exam. Though it is okay if you do not have access to a camera for the first practice exam

Presentations will be held on November 17,19,24,26. You must be ready to present on November 17 as I can call any one of you to present. Your presentation should be 3 to 4 minutes --should not exceed 4 minutes. You can have a sheet but you cannot read directly from the sheet (only taking a a few looks are allowed). You will find the information about the topics on the internet but you cannot just copy/paste, and read what you find. You have to write your own notes based on what you read from the different sources. I grade mainly whether or not you read from your notes, the content of your presentation, whether you copy/paste the information, and questions I ask based on your presentation.

I do not post lecture notes, and do not record the lectures. I might post partial notes from time to time.

If you plan not to attend the lectures, I would recommend not to take the class. You can take it next term from another instructor.

Students cannot record the classes.

Students will make presentations in this class. I will explain more in the class.
