Annotated Bibliography Prompt and Rubric

Due dates:

First draft: There will not be an official peer review for this assignment. Consider sending a draft to the Writing Lab.

Second draft due Friday, November 10 @ 11:55 p.m.

All optional drafts of all essays are due by Friday, December 8 @ 11:55 p.m.

For this assignment, you will locate six academic sources (e.g., journal articles, books, or government documents) that you will be using to write your upcoming Proposal Argument. For each source, you will write a one-page entry that includes the following:

1. MLA-style citation for the source (like you would see on a Works Cited page)

2. Summary of the source

3. Discussion of the source's credibility

4. Discussion of specific information you will be using from the source

5. Discussion of how the information will be used in your argument and why it will be effective

Your entries will be assessed based on these elements and the rubric below.

This assignment is two-pronged in that it helps you further develop your research methods and prepares your sources for the upcoming Proposal Argument. Research and reading go hand-in- hand, and this assignment will ensure that you read your sources thoroughly before you attempt to integrate them into your argument. This assignment will also expand your knowledge of the topic you will be using for your Proposal Argument and will serve as a survey, affording you the opportunity to get a feel for the landscape you’ll be facing when it comes time to write.

Rubric for Annotated Bibliography

Characteristics of the A Paper

• MLA citations are nearly perfect with only a few trivial mistakes or none at all

• Summaries of sources are complete and concise

• Thorough discussions of sources' credibility

• Thorough discussions of specific information student will be using from each source

• Thorough discussions of how each source fits into the argument

• Entries are largely free of spelling, grammatical, and mechanical errors

• Paper is in pristine MLA format

Characteristics of the B Paper

• MLA citations contain a few minor mistakes

• Summaries of sources could be more complete and more concise

• The credibility discussion for each source is discussed but may be questionable

• Discussions of specific information the student will be using from each source are present but not complete or lacking

• Discussions of how each source fits into the argument could be expanded

• Entries have a few spelling, grammatical, and mechanical errors

• Paper is in near pristine MLA format with only a few mistakes

Characteristics of the C Paper

• MLA citations contain some mistakes

• Summaries of sources are not complete or take up too much of the entry

• The credibility discussion for each source is brief or lacking

• There is little discussion of specific information the student will be using from each source

• Discussions of how each source fits into the argument are lacking

• Entries contain some spelling, grammatical, and mechanical errors

• Paper is in MLA format for the most part with a few elements incorrect or missing

Characteristics of the D Paper

• MLA citations contain several mistakes

• Summaries of sources are not complete

• The credibility discussion for each source is incomplete

• It is unclear what specific information the student will be using from each source

• Discussions of how each source fits into the argument are incomplete

• Entries contain several spelling, grammatical, and mechanical errors

• Critical MLA elements missing from paper

Characteristics of the F Paper

• MLA citations are incorrect

• Summaries of sources are not complete or missing entirely

• The credibility discussion for each source is missing
