Format: Please see the instructions under the tab labeled How To Format a Paper. Incorrect Formatting will result in a 5
point penalty.
File Name: The file name must be Last, First Name Annotated Bibliography. Failure to save the file name correctly will
result in a 5 point penalty.
Point of View: Stick to 3rd person objective. No 1st or 2nd person point of view allowed. So, no I, Me, My, You or Your
allowed.
Sources: There must be 3 academic sources (internet or library database). The sources must be of academic quality: No
Wikipedia, No Open Source and No General Reference sites. Find an article that is making some kind of argument about
the topic. General newspaper articles will probably not be useful.
MLA: Use easybib.com to help with the citations. All rules for MLA documentation must be followed. Failure to provide
correct MLA documentation will result in a failing grade.
Purpose: Students need to learn proper research methods and learn how to identify important information in a source. The
job for this assignment is to create annotations, with the citation, for three articles.
Topics: Students must research any or all of these topics: Poverty (probably want to narrow this down to a specific region, age, or myths even), Violence (probably want to narrow it down to some kind of connection between violence and
economic class or violence and crime) and/or Nature Versus Nurture. Do not research or write on any other topic.
WHAT IS AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY?
An annotated bibliography is a listing of articles, with summaries, and their Work Cited entries.
There are 2 parts to an Annotated Bibliography entry:
1) – the Work Cited (WC) entry
2) - First part of the paragraph outlines the main ideas of the article. The second part of the paragraph provides critical
comments about the quality of the writing. Some questions to consider: How well is the article organized? How well is the
argument supported (type of evidence used and the variety of evidence)? Is the tone and word usage appropriate for the
topic?
Here is a breakdown of what needs to be in the paragraph:
Provide at least 5 sentences that give an overview of the article’s main ideas and comments on the quality of the writing.
So, in a nutshell here is what I am looking for on the AB assignment:
Requirements:
1. There must be 3 entries (3 paragraphs with Work cited information).
2. Each annotation must have a correct Work Cited entry before the paragraph.
3. The entries must be in alphabetical order by author’s last name.
4. The entries should be at least 5 sentences, but not longer than 7 sentences.
5. All entries must be free from spelling or grammar errors.
Reminder:
This assignment is not a paper! It is a summary of the research found on the topic chosen.
