What is the article about?

Major depression is a worldwide issue that has been identified as a priority of the World Health Organization. This was a theoretical, and meta-analysis, article that reviewed current treatments for treating major depression (such as psychotropic medications, and Cognitive Behavior Therapy interventions) against the possibility of using the knowledge and interventions of positive psychology, especially PAI (positive activities interventions) to treat major depression. Specifically mentions a meta-analysis of 51 positive psychology interventions with depressed and non-depressed participants that showed that PAIs were effective in improving mood, and a sense of well-being for about 29 – 31% which was close to the .32 percent effect rate of psychotherapy.

Why was the research performed?

To show the potential for positive psychology to improve the treatment of major depressive disorder.

Findings Positive psychology methods for interventions for improving mood have been developed, and may be useful in treating depressive disorders.

Strengths Good overview of current treatments for major depression, and the current state of positive psychology.

Weaknesses Only shows the potential. Small studies, and meta-analysis show the possibility of using PAIs as a supplement to treatment. Did not mention Activation Therapy for depression which has some strong corollaries to the author’s proposed PAI approach.

Implications for Practice

Positive Activities Interventions pose little risk to clients, and pose little to no risk to clients, and actually fit directly with Activation Therapy approaches which is already viewed as a valid approach to treating depression as well as anxiety. However, the effectiveness of PAIs for major depression has yet to be shown in any of the information reviewed for this paper. Including this article.
