Euthanasia Annotated Bibliography

Forbes, Steve. “Time to Terminate ‘Assisted Dying.’” Forbes, Forbes Media, 11 Sept. 2018, www.forbes.com/sites/steveforbes/2018/09/11/time-to-terminate-assisted-dying/#a55494978882

Steve Forbes is the Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of Forbes Media. Forbes is an acclaimed business magazine. In his article, Steve addresses the chilling reality of euthanasia and the devastating consequences that follow its legalization. Steve gives examples of sick children under the age of 11 that “agreed” to be euthanized once being diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. The idea of a child making the decision to end his/her life at such a young age sounds unlikely and leads to the conclusion that the parents played a significant tole in determining if their child deserved to live or not. The question of whether the child had any say in the matter remains a mystery. The audience that Steve Forbes was trying to reach, through his article, was anyone weighing in on the debate for or against euthanasia. His article was written as affirmation for those against euthanasia and as a moral challenge to the people supporting euthanasia. My essay is going to reflect his beliefs and incorporate stories about the naïve children that were killed without understanding of what they were giving consent for, and the stories of people that were pushed toward choosing euthanasia by their nurses and physicians.

De Beaufort, Inez, and Suzanne Van de Vathorst. "Dementia and Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia." Journal of Neurology, vol. 263, no. 7, 2016, pp. 1463-1467. ProQuest, url=https://search.proquest.com/docview/1800618160?accountid=15152, doi:http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00415-016-8095-2.

In their article, Beaufort and Vathorst discuss Dementia and how the legalization of euthanasia has affected the life quality of patients suffering with this disorder. The intended audience for the article is the areas of the world that are contemplating the legalization of euthanasia and are unsure of the consequences that will occur after this decision. Because the authors have already witnessed, firsthand, what legalization does to those in critical condition, the text can offer a perspective that most people do not possess. I am going to incorporate statistics for the increase in patients demanding an early death after legalization and what factors play into this increase of decisions.

Varelius, Jukka. “Active and Passive Physician-Assisted Dying and the Terminal Disease Requirement.” Bioethics, vol. 30, no. 9, Nov. 2016, pp. 663–671. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1111/bioe.12282.

Dr. Jukka Varelius is a biomedical philosopher at the University of Turku in Finland. He has dedicated his life to researching euthanasia and debating whether it should be legalized or banned. In his article, Dr, Jukka takes a neutral stance toward the issue and lists both perspectives towards euthanasia. He also informs the reader on every type of suicide and the pros and cons that follow each decision. Dr. Jukka’s article is meant to reach those who have an interest in euthanasia and fully inform them on the issue. I am going to use his article as an explanation of euthanasia for the reader that doesn’t fully understand the concept and all that it entails. Dr. Jukka includes information on the legal side of euthanasia and possible violations that may occur. I am going to incorporate these violations as support for my main points in my persuasive essay against euthanasia.
