Summary & Reflection (75-word minimum): |
Author Keith Bryant argues that half of young Americans say they dont know much about the U.S military the people who work daily to protect their freedom. They don’t understand the depth of the knowledge and technical skills they can learn in one hundred fifty different career paths. They don’t understand the degrees they can earn or that the benefits and perks often match or surpass those offered by civilian employers. From this article I could use how little knowledge can make teenagers turn away from the option I could incorporate research of those who do know more about the military and how they believe and understand it will be a good option.

Author Dace Philipps argues that rates of military service remain far from equal in the United States, and the gap may continue to widen because a driving decision to enlist is whether a young person knows anyone who served in the military. In communities where veterans are plentiful, teachers, coaches, mothers, uncles and other mentors often steer youths toward military service. In communities where veterans are scarce, influential adults are more wary. That has created a broad gap, easily seen on a map. The South, where the culture of military service runs deep and military installations are plentiful, produces 20 percent more recruits than would be expected, based on its youth population. From this article I can use how the enlistment rate may continue to go down due to younger people not knowing anyone who previously served also so they dont have any history of the military or what they would be getting themselves in to.

Experts say the military's appeal has been waning among young people, and a tight labor market is typically the toughest time to recruit. From this article I could use how teenagers having other job options can also turn them away from thinking about the military as an option

Toronto Thompson argues that the recruiting age should be raised because they don't deploy anyone until they're the age of majority, 18, but they can have recruits as young as 16, but they're primarily in different training and education programs. I could use this to incorporate how joining the military at a younger age can be easier for you to get adapted too and have more time to learn what you need to know about the military. |

In this article they argue how Joining the military has its perks, we too often talk about sacrifice alone," he said. Pentagon chief said popular culture has given young people a skewed view of what it's like to be in the armed forces. Movies like 'American Sniper,' videogames like 'Call of Duty,' TV commercials with troops coming home - you see all those, and they're most likely where you see our military every day unless you have a family member or a friend who's serving," Carter told the students, but those images are "only a slice of what our military does." Gale argues that Military recruiters maintain recruitment centers but also regularly visit high schools, colleges, job fairs, shopping malls, and public events to find new applicants. The military has launched recruitment campaigns through billboards, television, radio, and social media. During the first decades of the twenty-first century, the military has struggled to find enough people to meet each branch's recruitment quotas who are both willing to enlist and fit to serve. Incentives to enlist, including signing bonuses and skills training, are used in conjunction with appeals to a recruit's sense of patriotism. Though recruiters are bound by a code to maintain specific ethical standards, detractors have criticized the military for aggressively targeting low-income communities, minorities, and minors. I can use this article to incorporate how the military struggles to get people to enlist despite the high school visits and the multiple campaigns.
