Annotated Bibliography Assignment
Goals of This Assignment:
· To find useful sources for your argument essay
· To examine your sources and see if they are relevant to your topic
· To make connections in the field of chosen topic
· To prepare for Literature Review
· To practice citing sources in MLA 8 format (for your Works Cited page)
Prompt:
An annotated bibliography is a single document that summarizes and analyzes your sources. It indicates how you will or might use those sources in your upcoming Literature Review and Argument Essay. You will need 6-10 sources total, 4 of which must be scholarly (i.e., “peer-reviewed”). Each annotation should be at least one full paragraph in length including how the articles relates to at least one other.
After selecting and reading your sources, do the following for each source:
· Give a complete and accurate MLA 8 citation.
· Write a summary of the major points in the article/essay/video/encyclopedia entry, analyzing the larger issues the author is concerned with and/or any aspect of the rhetorical situation.
· Write about how you will or might use the source in your paper.
· In addition, consider adding a sentence about a specific point the article makes that you want to remember for your paper and/or a quote you may want to use.
· You may also want to include how this source passed the OAR test (see below).
· Include a few statements about how the article relates to at least one other.
Finding credible sources can be difficult in today’s media-saturated world. How can you tell which sources are “good” and which one’s aren’t? Before you “put in your oar” and join the conversation, check the quality of your sources with the OAR test:
· Objectivity: Who is the author? Is it a corporate author (company, organization, not a person)? What is the “agenda” or “mission” of the author (what is he or she trying to convince you to do/think/believe)?
· Authority: Is this a credible source? Does the author know enough about the topic to give you accurate information (i.e., the author is an expert, did their research, or knows what he/she is talking about)?
· Relevance: When was it written/created? How is this source relevant to the topic of literacy? What are some reasons that you might want to use this source for your argument essay about literacy?
Grading:
For this assignment, I will be grading on the following:
· Correct MLA 8 citations and correct formatting on the document as a whole
· Adequate summary of each source that reflects your understanding of it
· Relevant and clear discussion of the problem or issue that the author is addressing
· An indication of how you will use the source in your paper and how it relates to at least one other source

Here are some additional notes:
