ANNOTED BIBLIOGRAPHY
Annotated Bibliography
Assignment Objective: To summarize an article from scholarly literature.
Peer review is a process that journals use to ensure that the articles they publish represent the best scientific evidence currently available. Publications that do not use peer review (Time, Southern Living, Good Housekeeping) rely on the judgment of the editors and scientific merit cannot be assured. How can you tell if a journal is peer reviewed? Look at this website: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/lsl/help/modules/peer.html (Links to an external site.)
An annotated bibliography 1) cites the complete reference, 2) describes the information provided, and 3) informs the reader of the usefulness and quality of the sources cited. The length is typically not more than 150 words (a paragraph) per source. Review and follow the information from Cornell University about preparing an annotated bibliography: http://olinuris.library.cornell.edu/ref/research/skill28.htm
Directions for Individual Assignment:
1. Conduct a search using at least one scholarly electronic database, such as CINAHL or OVID, and select articles from peer-reviewed journals on the selected topic. If you are unfamiliar with searching the databases, listen to the orientation video on Canvas (under Course Documents). You may also go into the library and consult the reference librarian for help. A “Google” search or general Internet search is not acceptable; neither is asking a librarian to conduct the search for you.
2. Find one (1) scholarly article on related to any topic addressed in this course. Choose current article (less than 5 years old). The article must be from a professional and peer-reviewed journal.
3. You may NOT repeat an article someone else has chosen.
4. Critically read and appraise the articles. Prepare an annotated bibliography of the article. For guidance: http://olinuris.library.cornell.edu/ref/research/skill26.htm
5. Create a Word document with a title page, use page headers and numbers. No reference is needed, because the reference is part of the annotated bibliography.
