Annotated Bibliography Assignment

 Assignment Overview:USE RESOURCE WHICH YOU HAVE USED IN PAPER

An annotated bibliography is a list of citations of books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 – 250 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited and to help you find evidence and focus for your literary research paper. Your annotated bibliography should include at least 5 sources. Remember that wikis, encyclopedias, shoomp, cliff notes (and the like),  and dictionaries will not count as a source for this project.

Requirements:

Creating an annotated bibliography calls for the application of a variety of intellectual skills: concise explanation, succinct analysis, and informed library research. First, include your primary sources (literature read for the courses and explain how you plan to use them.  Second, locate and record citations to books, periodicals, and documents that may contain useful information and ideas on your topic. Briefly examine and review the actual items. Then choose those works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic. Cite the book, article, or document using MLA style. Write a concise annotation that summarizes the central theme and scope of the book or article. Your annotation should address the following points for full credit for secondary sources.

· evaluate the authority or background of the author,

· summarize the article’s main argument and at least two points of evidence used to support the argument.

· explain how this work contributes to your understanding of your topic, and HOW YOU PLAN TO USE IT IN  YOUR RESEARCH PAPER. Be specific.

 

SAMPLE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ENTRY FOR A JOURNAL ARTICLE

This example uses the MLA format for the journal citation. NOTE: Standard MLA practice requires double spacing within citations, but for an annotated bibliography you may single space your entire document.

Waite, Linda J., Frances Kobrin Goldscheider, and Christina Witsberger. "Nonfamily Living and the Erosion of Traditional Family Orientations Among Young Adults." American Sociological Review 51 (1986): 541-554. Print

The authors, researchers at the Rand Corporation and Brown University, use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that nonfamily living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans, and expectations, moving them away from their belief in traditional sex roles. They find their hypothesis strongly supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males. Increasing the time away from parents before marrying increased individualism, self-sufficiency, and changes in attitudes about families. In contrast, an earlier study by Williams cited below shows no significant gender differences in sex role attitudes as a result of nonfamily living. This article will be useful for my research assignment because it provides statistics which I can use to counter argue my thesis statement. I will use the following statistics in my essay: 7 out of 10 children live in nontraditional households  (214); etc.).  (this is a made up statistic – don’t use it)..

Write about the ways the authors of the three works of literature incorporate these elements in their work. You only need to select three of the elements - not discuss all of them.
