Writing an Annotated Bibliography Entry

Using the instructions outlined below, create entries for an annotated bibliography.

Remember, every source you collect should be annotated and an entry should be created for your annotated bibliography.

The Process

1. Find a source of scholarly integrity. This means that the source is written and published by a person/organization that is directly related to your paper’s topic. Use the Monroe College e-databases or resources in a library. Those are the best!

2. Print or photocopy the source. In other words, make a hard copy.

3. Read and annotate the source (take notes, highlight, “communicate” with the source).

4. Create the References Page citation.

5. Write a summary of the source. Your summary should be in your own words, highlighting the major points and ideas that you will translate into your research paper and include your own analysis—why is this info important and how will it be used in your research paper?

6. Your summary should include the answers to 6 questions:

a. Who: Name of the author,* and his/her credentials or affiliation

*If more than one author, this is written only about the first (primary) author, as that person is responsible for ensuring the quality of others’ contributions

b. Why: Why did the researchers undertake this study; what did they hope to learn?

c. When: In what year was the study conducted (usually not the publication year)

d. Where: In which city, state, or country was the study conducted

e. How: How was the study conducted – detailed description including

methodology type (qualitative, quantitative, mixed-method, literature

review, or meta-study)

f. What: What did the researcher(s) find results of the study

Sample Summary:

Anyone reading the summary below knows who the main author is (name, credentials); why , when , where , and how the study was conducted; and what the researcher(s) found (5 “W” and 1 “H” questions).

Please find the answers to all six questions below and underline them!

Dr. Manya C. Bouteneff, Professor at Monroe College, conducted research in 2020 on New York State’s Public schools with over 40% poverty in order to learn what practices may lead to successful outcomes for these students. For this mixed-methods study, she used New York State annual English Language Arts exam scores to identify which of these schools were most successful with students in poverty, and then interviewed their principals to determine to which practices they attributed their success. She coded the interviews in order to find patterns in their responses. The top two factors she found were: a.) the use of data to focus instruction; and b.) relationships with students and overall school culture.

References

Instructions:

As you work on your research paper, you should be citing the sources of your information, whether you have paraphrased, summarized, or quoted the material.

This activity asks you to write out the proper citations for your References page.

In the space below, fill out the fields for each source that are needed. You might not need to fill them all out; it depends on the type of source. Once you have acquired all the necessary information, create your References entry.

Here is an explanation for each field:

· Type of source = book, magazine article, newspaper article, website article, database article, etc.

· Author(s) = name(s) of source’s author(s)

· Publication/Website Title = what is the name of the newspaper, book, magazine, website, journal, etc.?

· Article Title = this refers to the name of the article, whether that is a magazine article, newspaper article, journal article, or website article.

· Date of publication = when was the material, whether print or web, published?

· Publisher/Sponsor of Website = what company publishes the material whether it’s a print source of a web source?

· Page Numbers: this is for print sources only, and particularly only for articles of journals, newspapers, magazines, etc.

· URL = this is only for websites; what is the address of the source? Include the whole thing.

· Place of Publication = this refers only to books; where was the book published?

· Date of Access = this is only for web articles; when did you access it? Give the whole date.

· Database Name = this refers to the name of the database where you retrieved an academic article

· Volume = This is the volume number of the journal from the scholarly article

· Issue = This is the issue number of the journal from the scholarly article
