Marijuana usage has been an issue of debate in the U.S. The substance has been seen to have potential benefits in treating different diseases. The perception of people has changed over the years since the legalization positively. However, there the youths are negatively affected by the use of the substance education-wise. Therefore, there is a need to analyze the trend, benefits, and limitations of substance use.
Amy M. Cohn, Amanda L. Johnson, Shyanika W. Rose, Jessica M. Rath & Andrea C. Villanti (2017). Support for Marijuana Legalization and Predictors of Intentions to Use Marijuana More Often in Response to Legalization Among U.S. Young Adults. Substance Use & Misuse, 52(2), p. 203-213, DOI: 10.1080/10826084.2016.1223688.
Various states in the USA have legalized the use of Marijuana. CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive substance in Marijuana, which is considered useful owing to its medical benefits. The other categorization is medical Marijuana refers to Marijuana that has been prescribed by a trained and certified physician to help patients to manage symptoms of certain conditions; for instance, patients with intractable seizures. On the other hand, recreational pot is Marijuana that is often consumed with no backing of medical justification and contains significant quantities of THC, the psychoactive substance in Marijuana (Amy et al., 2017). Trafficking of Marijuana is still illegal.
Chawla, N., & Sood, M. (2016). Medical marijuana laws and marijuana use in the USA: Any lessons?. The National medical journal of India, 29(4), 220.
According to the article, the use of Marijuana among youths has been increasing over the years. “Such use has been reported to be associated with impairment in memory, coordination, and judgement in the short term and cognitive impairment, unemployment, psychiatric symptoms and substance addiction in the long term”(Chawla & Sood, pg.220). The article mentions that the use of Marijuana affects the health of people. Also, the implementation of the law to legalize Marijuana can affect the use of the substance because people will abuse it given the law. The FDA has approved the use of cannabinoid chemicals in pills as treatment for nausea, vomiting for cancer patients, and appetite for HIV patients ”(Chawla & Sood, 2016). The article urges other countries like India to think before they legalize the use of Marijuana. It is true because as the law is implemented, people start misusing the substance claiming that the law accepts the act. The article is useful in the research because it mentions the effects the law can have and the problems encountered with the use of Marijuana.
Harpin, S. B., Brooks-Russell, A., Ma, M., James, K. A., & Levinson, A. H. (2018). Adolescent marijuana used and perceived ease of access before and after recreational marijuana implementation in Colorado. Substance use & misuse, 53(3), 451-456.
(Harpin et al., 2018) examines the changes in behavioral use of Marijuana after the recreational marijuana implementation among adolescents. After the application of the recreational law, there was an increase in accessibility within one year by about 6%. “While the social impacts of these changes remain under debate, the influence on adolescent marijuana use is a key policy and health issue across the U.S.” (Harpin et al., 2018). Adolescents are affected by the use of Marijuana in terms of their education. Marijuana has a negative health effect on youths (Harpin, par.2). The article mentions that there is no much rise in the use of Marijuana among adolescents after recreational implementation. I agree because many youths have been thought of the negative effects of using Marijuana; therefore, they do not use it much. The article has impacted positively in the study because it gives a detailed analysis of how the legalization of Marijuana has affected the youth and adolescents.
Schwadel, P., & Ellison, C. G. (2017). Period and cohort changes in Americans’ support for marijuana legalization: Convergence and divergence across social groups. The Sociological Quarterly, 58(3), 405-428.
The article analyzes the changes in attitude from when the legalization of Marijuana was implemented until 2014. “Research since the 1960s indicates that support for marijuana legalization is disproportionately high among the middle and upper classes” (Schwadel & Ellison, 2017). Also, men are more likely to support the legalization of Marijuana compared to women. In the article, different cohort groups are analyzed to establish their opinions on the legalization of Marijuana. I agree with the arguments in the article regarding different generations and that women are more considerate compared to men. The article is useful in the research because it gives quality information on how different groups of people view the legalization of Marijuana in the US.
Subbaraman, M. S., & Kerr, W. C. (2017). Support for marijuana legalization in the US state of Washington has continued to increase through 2016. Drug and alcohol dependence, 175, 205-209.
(Subbaraman & Kerr, 2017) analyzes the support for marijuana legalization in the state of Washington, which has had the law for about four years. “Currently, Washington does not permit growing marijuana for personal recreational use, and still considers it a felony.” (Subbaraman, pg.11). There has been no significant increase in support for the law because some see it as an illegal act. There has been less increase in support for the law. The authors mention that there has been an increase for the people who were nonusers of Marijuana after the passing of the law. It is true because legalizing makes the substance be used personally. Therefore, the users will support the law although there will be high cases of misuse. The article helps understand the trends of how people react to the legalization of the use of Marijuana.
