Step Two: Annotated Bibliography

a. Explanation: The 3-5 page annotated bibliography assignment will help you prepare for your
final, argumentative research paper. The idea is to gather and evaluate your six sources that you
will use in your Argumentative Research Paper before you write your paper. Hopefully, this
assignment will save you time and effort while writing.
b. Format: The format of the annotated bibliography will be similar to a MLA Works Cited
page. The difference will be adding summaries of the sources you will be using in your research
paper right after your citation.
c. Summaries: The summaries should be about 7-9 sentences in length and come right after the
citation. The summaries must contain information about:
• The content of the source
o What is in it?
o What type of information does it provide? Statistics, studies, anecdotal evidence etc.
• The reason why this source is being used
o What makes it valuable? The author is highly respected? There are professionals
and experts quoted? Etc.
o Which argument/arguments of yours does it help support?
d. Number: Your annotated bibliography should consist of Six sources from 2012 or newer,
which you will be required to use to prove your arguments in your final paper.
e. Databases: At least THREE of your sources must be from the library’s databases. (EBSCO,
ProQuest, CQ Researcher, Opposing Viewpoints, or Films on Demand)

b. Label the assignment with the following information in the upper left-hand corner (double
space)
• Name
• Instructor’s Name
• Class name, number, and section
• Date
• Assignment name

c. Number the pages in the upper right-hand corner with your last name coming before the
number (ex. Bodelson 1)
▪ Click on the Insert Tab in the upper left-hand corner
▪ Select Page Number
▪ Select Top of Page
▪ Select Plain Number Three
▪ You will see the curser right before the page number. Go to that, and type
in your last name.
▪ Once you have finished, clicked on the red, Close Header box.
d. Six MLA citations (At least 3 from library databases).
e. 7-9 sentence summaries
f. ALL sources in your annotated bibliography MUST BE USED in your Essay 3:
Argumentative Research Paper. If you decide not to use one at any point of the research paper
process, you MUST replace it with a new source, citation, and annotation.
g. Save as a Word document .doc or .docx. Name the file: Annotated Bibliography-Your Last
name.
h. Once you have completed the Annotated Bibliography, please make sure to place a copy into
the D2L Assignments labeled Annotated Bibliography.
Due Date: There is only ONE draft for the Annotated Bibliography, so your final draft Must be
posted in the Assignments folder labeled Annotated Bibliography on Sunday, November 6th by
11:59 pm.

1) Labeling the Assignment: The labels required are all on the paper.

2) Sources Chosen: The researcher has chosen a strong variety of sources. There are at least
three sources from the college databases, and those sources are from different databases and
are different types of sources. The sources found have authors, dates published, and have been
vetted for credibility.

4) Citations: Each citation is in the correct MLA format, and it clear that the researcher
utilized the MLA handbook to make sure each citation follows the template. Each citation is
cited using the template that corresponds to the type of sources being cited. The citations follow
all of the rules of the Works Cited page. i.e. are in alphabetical order, are double spaced etc.

3) Annotations: Each annotation clearly explains what the source contains and what type of
information it provides i.e. statistics, anecdotal evidence etc. Each annotation clearly explains
what about the source makes the source valuable. Each annotation ends with 1-2 sentences that
clearly states which of the writer’s argument and/or arguments the source will be used to help
support.

5) Grammar: The annotations are free of run-ons, comma splices, fragments and awkward
phrasing. It is clear that the writer proofread the paper. The writer does NOT talk directly to the
reader by avoiding “You” statements also known as second person point of view.
