Annotated Bibliography (Literature Review) Assignment for English 303

An annotated bibliography, or literature review, is a bibliography with description or annotations added to each source. The purpose of the annotation is to help the reader evaluate whether the work cited is relevant to a specific research topic or line of inquiry. An annotated bibliography is not an abstract. Abstracts are brief descriptive statements at the beginning of some books, periodicals, or documents that present the main points of the original work. They normally do not include a critical review of the work itself. Annotations can be descriptive, evaluative, or both. A descriptive annotation summarizes the scope and content of a work while an evaluative annotation provides critical comment. Your annotated bibliographies will be both: the first part is an informative/ descriptive annotation—it describes and summarizes the article/book in question. The second part is a critical annotation— it analyzes the usefulness of the work for a particular audience or a particular situation. The best analysis will show both how the work relates and compares to other works on the topic as well as how or whether the work would be useful to others exploring the topic. Assignment Instructions You will annotate five of the references you will be using for your white paper (this includes research used for writing the definition paper). This assignment will focus on early research as it will be submitted before you are finished with the definition paper, and, thus, the white paper.

• The sources should be clearly related to your subject and thesis. • Each annotation will be a paragraph at least three sentences long. Try to keep each

paragraph to no more than six sentences. • Each should be concise and well written. • Write each entry using the “literary present tense” or the “historical present”:

“This article discusses…” instead of “This article discussed…” “She explains…” instead of “She explained…”

Your annotations will include:

• The work listed in MLA format (except it will be single-spaced; see example below). • Relevant background and credibility of the author. For help with this, reference librarians

can help you in finding appropriate biographical references or book review sources. • The focus or purpose of the work (a summary of the central point or scope of the work). • Special features of the work that are unique or helpful. • The intended audience for the work. • Conclusions or observations reached by the author. • Conclusions or observations reached by you.

Format annotated bibliographies as follows:

1. Use Times New Roman, size 12. 2. Aligned to the left at the top of the page (not in the page header) type the following:

Prepared for: Mr. David M. Merchant, English 303-[section number] Prepared by: [your first name and last name] [Date in month (spelled out) day, year]

3. Skip a line and then type, centered, an appropriate title that marks it as specific to your paper and an Annotated Bibliography (for example, “Solutions to the Kraft Recovery Process”: An Annotated Bibliography). Do not include a period at the end of the title.

4. Skip a line (double-spaced) before starting the first entry. 5. List each entry alphabetically. 6. The citation is formatted to standard MLA except it is single-spaced. 7. Skip a line between the citation and the informative/descriptive part of the annotation. 8. The entire informative annotation is indented and single-spaced. 9. Skip a line between the informative part and the critical part of the annotation. 10. The entire critical annotation is indented and single-spaced. 11. Skip a line before the next bibliography entry. 12. In the top of the succeeding pages (page 2, for example), at the very top of the page,

double-click to enter the page header, choose “Different First Page” and then type in the page header the name of your assignment (for example, “Solutions to the Kraft Recovery Process”: An Annotated Bibliography) and then on the second line type Page and insert the page number (have a space between “Page” and the number). Right-align the text. There should be no page number showing on the first page. Again, all text is in Times New Roman, size 12.

“The Influence of Television”: An Annotated Bibliography London, Herbert. "Five Myths of the Television Age." Television Quarterly 10 (1) Spring 1982:

81-89. Herbert London, the Dean of Journalism at New York University and author of several books and articles, explains how television contradicts five commonly believed ideas. He uses specific examples of events seen on television, such as the assassination of John Kennedy, to illustrate his points. His examples have been selected to contradict such truisms as: "seeing is believing"; "a picture is worth a thousand words"; and "satisfaction is its own reward." London uses logical arguments to support his ideas which are his opinions. He does not refer to any previous works on the topic. However, for a different point of view, one should refer to Joseph Patterson's, "Television is Truth" (The Journal of Television 45 (6) November/December 1995: 120-135). London's style and vocabulary would make the article of interest to any reader. The article clearly illustrates London's points but does not explore their implications, leaving the reader with many unanswered questions.

Let us break down the example. The first part is the citation formatted to MLA practice except it is single-spaced.

The second part, the informative/descriptive annotation section, is indented and single-spaced. The indention vertically aligns with the indentation of the second line of the citation (for citations with more than one line). A blank, regular font size line separates it from the citation. This example is five sentences long.

The critical annotation section is indented and single-spaced. A blank, regular font size line separates it from the informative annotation section. This example is three sentences long (the minimum). If one of your sources has an opposing view to the source you are annotating, you need to mention that opposing view in the critical annotation section; otherwise, the opposing source sentence can be left out. Note: I want you to follow technical writing English usage which requires that you do not use contractions.
