Annotated Bibliography “Does Technology Make Us More Alone”

Bulmer, D., & DiMauro, V. (2009). Executive Summary from the Society for New Communications Research Study: The New Symbiosis of Professional Networks: Social Media's Impact on Business and Decision-Making. Journal of New Communications Research, 4(2), 93-100.

Scholars Bulmer and DiMauro looked at how social media is changing some people's relationships as a result of the new technologies. The Internet has had a major impact on how individuals connect with potential clients when it comes to advertising. Instead of spending a lot of money on traditional advertising, they figure, they'll use social media like Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter to promote their product or service. My research and this article have a connection since the authors have summarized how social media has affected people's daily interactions, particularly in the workplace. The old methods of advertising on television and in newspapers are no longer effective. This trend has reshaped the way organizations market to their customers and the way they connect with them. There are many benefits to utilizing social media advertising, but it also has the potential to make people feel isolated or lonelier than they otherwise would.

In contrast to most of my other sources, this piece is more concerned with the negative impacts of technology on today's kids and young people in general. The article addresses how technology influences a person's development in areas such as peer hostility, social anxiety, and communication with one's parents. This would be a suitable source for a rebuttal to the original claim. Using this article, one may attempt to explain why individuals have come to the view that technological advancement has made humankind more isolated. It might also provide information regarding features of modern living that have resulted in a loss in human interaction. This article has already been subjected to peer review by industry professionals. The credentials of this article have also been verified by the GTCC library staff.

Morrison C. (2021, November 5). Excessive internet use is linked to depression. ScienceDaily.  https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/02/100202193605.htm

Morrison, the author, did research on the relationship between excessive internet use and depression. Morrison discovered that social networking might have a negative impact on relationships in two ways: by reducing face-to-face contact and by increasing time spent on the computer at the expense of social engagement. Like any addictive activity, when you experience emotions of loss of control, spend much more time online than anticipated, and replace face-to-face connections with online relationships, that's when the difficulties start to manifest themselves. The results of a 2013 poll conducted by the corporate training company Vital Smarts revealed that 75 percent of users had witnessed an altercation on social media, 20 percent have reduced in-person contact with someone as a result of what they said online, and 90 percent believe that people are less courteous on social media than they are in person. Individuals see circumstances from behind a screen, as we sit alone in front of our iPhones, computers, or tablets, with no requirement to make physical contact with other people in the room. This article is an excellent addition to my thesis since it illustrates how technology may make individuals feel lonely, mainly when they spend more time on their computers than in face-to-face interaction with other people.

Primack, B. (2009). Association of various components of media literacy and adolescent smoking. American Journal of Health Behavior33(2).  https://doi.org/10.5993/ajhb.33.2.8

According to the Author Primack, spending excessive time on social media sites such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Reddit can result in feelings of envy and the false belief that others have better and more successful lives. Because we can see so much occurring but are unable to participate, we feel more alone, and our attention is drawn away from real-world interactions and toward "stalking" other people's lives, as the study indicates. Consider how bizarre it is that, despite social media being supposed to bring people closer together, we frequently overlook connecting with others around us in favor of our phone requirements. We are losing touch with our core communication talents since we are no longer interacting with one another on a regular basis. Despite the fact that we are unduly obsessed with our phones. This article is relevant to my paper because the authors have clearly demonstrated that social media has accomplished the polar opposite of what it was intended to accomplish: it was created to help people feel more connected and engaged in one another's lives, but it has failed and has caused people to feel and be thousands of miles apart from one another.

Saylor, Michael. The Mobile Wave How Mobile Intelligence Will Change Everything. Da Capo Press, 2013

This source was evaluated in February 2013 by Choice, a publishing unit of the American Council on Library Resources (ACRL), which provides academic library communities with the tools and services they need most often via Choice magazine and the Choice Reviews database. This book examines the impact of computing technology as well as its potential applications in the future. This book, on the other hand, does not cover a wide range of technological topics. The report's primary emphasis is the growing usage of smartphones, tablets, laptops, smartwatches, and other mobile devices. This sort of source is particularly beneficial for communication, discussion, and social engagement. In today's society, these are the majority of the essential technical instruments that are utilized for communication purposes. Devices like these are often responsible for connecting us to the rest of the world.

This article explores the evolution of technology throughout history. In his subsequent speech, Simon explains how technology such as the telephone has contributed to our civilization's advancement over the years. This article would be utilized to demonstrate how technology has brought people from all over the world together and encouraged human contact in my essay. For example, I might use the telephone to explain the advantages and disadvantages of communicating with people in other countries, enterprises, and romantic relationships across vast distances. This source has already been subjected to a rigorous peer-review process to ensure its correctness. In addition, the school library database evaluated the start of this material and reviewed its credentials to ensure that it was factual and credible.

Turkle, Sherry. “Tethered to Technology”.New York Times Company, Oct 3, 2015, New York. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/04/opinion/sunday/tethered-to-technology.html? partner=Bloomberg

These professors of communication, psychology, sociology, and psychiatry penned this piece of writing, which would be ideal for this assignment. It would be a good source of knowledge for a counter-argument, as well. According to this article, individuals become disconnected from the actual world while using their phones and other mobile gadgets. Afterwards, it goes on to explore what occurs when people take the time to put their phones down. Essentially, it explains why we may seem to be alone when we examine how we connect and communicate with one another at home or independently.

Viola, D. M. (2021). Negative health review of cell phones and social media. Journal of Mental Health and Clinical Psychology5(1), 7-18.  https://doi.org/10.29245/2578-2959/2021/1.1232

Author Viola did a study on the adverse health effects of mobile phones and social media, which demonstrated the negative side effects of cell phones and social media. A person's real-world interactions are diminished when they are tempted to check their phone, and the diversion provided by a phone to one spouse does not help the other spouse feel good about their relationship. According to research published in the journal Psychology of Popular Media Culture, people who were more dependent on their telephones had lower levels of confidence in their romantic relationships. The majority of those who perceive their spouses are overly reliant on their electronic gadgets report feeling less fulfilled in their relationships and are more likely to be lonely themselves. It is critical that I include this article in my thesis since the author has emphasized on how technology, specifically the mobile phone, has ultimately made humans feel lonely and more alone. It appears that we are more attached to our phones than we are to our pals.
