Theoretical And Conceptual Foundations In Research

Theoretical and conceptual foundations constitute important building blocks in guiding

the research process. The researcher uses these foundations to develop a coherent and logical

structure that links the problem statement, the purpose of the study, the research questions, and

the interpretations of the findings. While both approaches help develop scholarly research, they

differ in their level of abstraction and the foundations on which they are based. This paper aims

to discuss how theoretical and conceptual foundations serve similar purposes but differ in their

origins and applications within a study.

The theoretical foundation is built on existing theory, which helps explain relationships

among variables and provides a basis for studying the phenomenon. Theories comprise

assumptions, propositions, and constructs that have been developed and proven through a

systematic research process. According to Han and Balabanis (2024), theories provide a general

explanation of the relationship between variables and help researchers to predict and understand

the outcomes. On the other hand, the conceptual framework is based on concepts and findings

identified in the literature and serves as a basis for studying the specific problem (Luft et al.,

2022). It is possible to incorporate multiple ideas into the framework rather than basing it on a

single theory.

However, there exist similarities in the role that theoretical foundations and conceptual

frameworks play in academic research. Both help in guiding the researcher in designing the

study, developing research questions, and collecting and analyzing data. Luft et al. (2022) noted

that conceptual frameworks facilitate the connection between the researcher's literature review

and the major components of the research. Therefore, they both enhance consistency among the

research problem, its purpose, and its methodology.
