The Storm
The storm focuses on a rainy day where there is a rekindling of love and the
engagement of sexual desires between two ex-lovers. An important question is why
individuals would put their valuable relationship in a mess for the sake of an old desire for
sex. Infatuation, lust, and affairs that are forbidden are always ready. As a result, it is not wise
that an individual put their relationship at risk for such a pleasure, would you? A storm is bad
weather that contains the presence of rain, lightning, and thunder and is usually a frightening
moment if an individual is caught up in the storm. The storm by Chopin represents a scene in
the text where sexualizing is the major theme. The storm sees Alcee and Calixta coming
together, reigniting their old lust and fling for each other.
Both Calixta and Alcee have sexual desires. The two have sexual desires and
connections that they share that they do not seem to find in their marriages. Bambino cannot
satisfy the sexual needs of Calixta as well as Alcee can. Alcee is Calixta’s source of lust,
while the cabinet is only her source of love. There is no passion for exploring sexual desires
between Calixta and Alcee from the text compared to Calixta and Alcee. While only sleeping
with one man, Calixta can not fully explore the sexual needs that she desires, and as a result,
Alcee makes her feel special in a certain kind of way that her husband can not make her feel.
The sexual desires are rekindled when lightning hits a chinaberry tree, Alcee embraces

Calista, and the sexual connection grows. As the storm intensified, the sexual desires also
intensified, and it was as if the storm was directly linked to sexual desires.
Literary elements
The plot
The plot is described as the main events of a play or a literary work designed and
presented by the writer as sequential interrelation. The plot of the storm is a short story
presented by Kate Chopin. The story describes the events when Alcee escapes from a storm
at the home of his former lover, Calixta. It is during the storm that their passion reignites.
Alcee sought shelter at the home of Calixta when her husband and son were out in the
market. It is relevant to note that Alcee and Calixta had an affair and their prior intentions
were to run again together, but in the end, they married other people instead. During the
heavy storm, the two individuals decide to reignite their passion. However, they understand
that their relationship cannot continue, and Alcee leaves before the family of Calixta can
return
Symbolism
The storm is used to demonstrate freedom. Ideally, a storm represents chaos and
difficulty. Storms also represent weakness, and the author has used the storm well to bring
the two ex-lovers together for one last time. It is not the intention of Calixta to have an affair,
but the memories of them together lift the mood for them. The other symbolism is that after
the storm, there was the sun, and the skies were clear, which Calixta felt after the affair; the
writer symbolizes this with freedom.
The storm also shows how the chinaberry tree was related to freedom. In the story,
Calixta stares out of the window and sees a chinaberry tree get struck by lightning; the strike
makes her stagger into the arms of Alcee. Therefore, it is possible to infer that the lightning

striking the chinaberry tree represents the passion between Calixta and Alcee getting
reignited again. The chinaberry tree is also used symbolically to represent the good and the
bad. In the story, the bad thing was the affair between Calixta and Alcee, and the good was
the freedom that Alcee felt after committing the affair. The readers can infer that Alcee held
Calixta sign that a bad thing was bound to happen. The readers can also conclude that the
chinaberry tree served a good purpose for Calixta. It led to her choosing to stay with her
family, and it is true to say that she still cared for her family even after the affair.
In conclusion, committing adultery is related to human beings; when individuals are
not happy in their relationships, it is not bad for them to choose freedom. When the story is
set, women cannot choose freely compared to today. Therefore, it is true that Calixta decided
to choose freedom while committing the affair with Alcee and that she chose the actions for
herself. The story uses symbolism to explain the different actions in the storm. The important
symbolism used includes the chinaberry tree, the imagery, and the foreshadowing to explain
the freedom that Calixta felt after committing adultery.
