Organ Donation and Transplantation

Organ donation is surgically removing a person’s organ or tissue and placing it into another person (Cleveland Clinic, Organ Donation and Transplantation: How it works 2021). This is done when the recipient (the person receiving the organ) has an organ or tissue that has failed or has been damaged. For example, there are people who have bilateral kidney failure and have to be put on the list for a donated organ. Currently, there is poor availability of organ supply from human cadavers, which has caused an immense gap between demand and supply of organs; physicians and ethicists have a belief that problems like these can be potentially solved by providing better care and counseling with informed consent to the family of the deceased person (Abouna, Ethical Issues in Organ Transplantation 2003).
