Girls becoming ladies

Top of Form

Some of the issues that are most threatening to girls in becoming emotionally and relationally healthy young ladies are:  1.  the prevalent absence of fathers in the home or uninvolved fathers; and 2.  early onset of puberty; and 3.  becoming sexually active at an early age.  All three of these contribute to the lack of emotional and relational health in young women.

Mothers' role in  their young girls' development is very important because mothers teach their daughters to be young ladies.  They do this verbally and by example.  If the mother is not a good role model, chances are her daughter will follow her lead anyhow.  Their in-put in what it means to be a woman and a lady cannot be replicated.

Fathers play a very specific part in their  little girl's lives because through them , their daughters develop secure attachment.  A girl who has a close relationship with her father will begin puberty later and will be less likely to become sexually active at a young age.  Her relationship with her father paves the way for a relationship with a boyfriend and a husband later one (Dobson, 2011).

When parents are lacking in their position of role model to their little girl, the child may become promiscuous at a young age, engaged in cutting, or suffer from anorexia/bulimia.  These are the extremes.  However, the relationship of a young girl has with her parents will give her a secure attachment and better prepare her for life outside of the home and later on when she becomes an adult (Dobson, 2011).

Parents who know Christ as Savior and Lord are more likely to be good role models to their daughters.  However, they must practice their faith by reading the Bible, taking their family to church and engaging in family devotions.  They also need to address "head on" the issues facing young people today.  The children need to know that their mother and father will be there and that they can always come to them to discuss any questions or issues that may arise in life.  As Doctor Dobson mentioned in his book, parents need to always be intentional in their job of child rearing.  Child rearing is challenging and rewarding at the same time.  However, when a parent introduces their child to the Savior early on in life, this can make all the difference in the world (Prov 22:6 KJV).  Knowing Christ as Savior and learning the Word can be an asset in guiding a child through life (Dobson, 2011).
