Bronze Age – Indus Valley Civilization

Ancient India

2600 BC: Mature Harappan phase of the Indus Valley Civilization begins. The cities of Harappa, and Mohenjo-daro become large cities and the civilization expands to over 2,500 cities and settlements across what is now Pakistan, much of northwestern and western India, and parts of Afghanistan and Iran. it also had superior urban planning and sewage systems.

Vedic Era (1500 – 500 BCE) – start of Hinduism as we know it

599 BCE – Mahavira creates Jainism

483 BCE – Gautama Buddha passes away

400 BCE – Buddhism officially forms in S Nepal

321 BCE – Mauryan Dynasty (Chandragupta Maurya)

Gupta empire ruled from 340- 298 BCE

Mauryan India was characterized by an efficient and highly organized bureaucratic structure with a large civil service. Due to its unified structure, the empire developed a strong economy, with internal and external trade thriving and agriculture flourishing.

Bindurasa’s son, Ashoka Gupta (known as Asoka the Great) became the next ruler who also ruled almost all of India 269BCE – 232BCE

After waging the Kalinga War he realized how destructive war is and converted to Buddhism

He created shrines of Buddha around India and Asia

"Ashoka regarded Buddhism as a doctrine that could serve as a cultural foundation for political unity." Ashoka is now remembered as a philanthropic administrator. In the Kalinga edicts, he addresses his people as his "children", and mentions that as a father he desires their good.
