COMP 2 Annotated Bibliography
COMP 1013/Johannesen
Assignment Sheet: Annotated Bibliography
Assignment:
Compile an annotated bibliography of at least eleven credible secondary sources related to the research question you plan to explore in the final research paper. An annotated bibliography is a list of citations where each citation is followed by a summary of the content presented in the cited source.
Your annotated bibliography must include at least eleven citations followed by summaries of 50- 100 words. Each summary should explain the main ideas/arguments presented in the cited source. The summaries should be detailed enough to show me (Dr. Johannesen) than you have read and understand the source.
Palmquist describes how to compile an annotated bibliography. Use APA citation formatting for each citation. List the citations in alphabetical order.
Your Annotated Bibliography should include:
1. Correct APA citations for at least eleven credible secondary sources related to your theme.
2. A paragraph of between 50-100 words summarizing the main ideas presented in the source.
3. An APA title page including your name, the name of the assignment (Annotated Bibliography), and the due date.
4. Page numbers for all pages of the document, including the title page. Insert page numbers in the upper-right hand corner of each page.
Goal of the Assignment:
Doing this research will prepare you to form a research question for your final research paper. You may draw from the sources listed in your annotated bibliography when working on your final research paper.
Formatting:
Double-space the entire document, including the title page, citations, and summaries. List the citations in alphabetical order and place each summary directly below the citation. A sample student annotated bibliography is posted in Canvas.
Use APA formatting to craft the citations. Use the examples for Reference page citations. See Chapter 21 of Palmquist.
Due date:
No rough draft is required, but if you would like some feedback you may show me a rough draft prior to submitting the final draft. See course schedule for due date.
Grading:
This assignment is worth 100 points. Your grade will be based on the accuracy of your citations, the quality of the sources, and the clarity and detail present in the summaries.
If you list fewer than 11 sources, and/or if you fail to summarize one or more sources, your grade will be lowered. If one or more of your summaries falls short of 50 words, your grade will be lowered. If there are errors in your use of APA citation formatting, your grade will be lowered.
Sample Entry:
Below is an example of one citation and summary. Your final annotated bibliography should include eleven entries like the one below.
Adams, P. C. (1997). Cyberspace and virtual places. The Geographical Review, 87(2), 155- 171. doi:10.1353/nlh.2010.0033
This article describes how place-based metaphors have come to be used to refer to virtual places. Examples of such metaphors include “information superhighway,” “virtual café,” “virtual frontier,” and “virtual classroom.” Adams suggests that the use of these terms foreshadows a kind of societal “place-lessness.” He also emphasizes that virtual places are ultimately metaphorical, imaginary places. This information is important to my research on my theme of “place” because it shows how technology is changing how individuals think about place.
Specifically, Adams suggests that increased use of these metaphors may cause place-based terms like “gateway” to lose their original meanings.
