Anatomy and physiology
The first part of this lab will involve having another individual/person test for the patella reflex and the Babinski sign on you.
1. To test the patella reflex, first you will need to build a patella reflex hammer.
Steps to build patella reflex hammer
a. To build this self made hammer you will need the following
i. 2 unsharpened pencils
ii. 1 eraser
iii. 2 rubber bands
iv. The finished patella hammer should look like this
2. Once you are done building your " hammer", follow the steps below to test for the patella reflex
Patella Reflex Test
a. Find the patella tendon (This should be done by a second person). Watch this video Patella Tendon Palpitation to help find the patella tendon
b. You (student taking this class) should be sited calmly on a chair with the Femur making a 90 degree angle with the Tibia.
c. At this point the individual assisting with this lab should proceed to strike your patella tendon quickly and firmly.
d. The assisting partner should do at least 5 repetition strikes to test for the patella reflex
e. Record the respond of your knee to the test in d.
f. Click and watch the Patella Reflex Test video as a reference video of what a patella test looks like
3. Next you and your assistant will test for the Babinski sign
Babinski Test Steps
a. Watch this video
b. Follow procedure shown in a.
c. For this test, I advise to use the blunt end of a spoon
c. Observe to see if your toes flex or extend.
d. Use the rubric below to write and submit a report on the test conducted.
Report Rubric
Title: 0.5 points : A suitable title for the experiments should be chosen
Introduction: 2.5 points: This paragraph should contain introductory information about the reflexes
Materials & Methods: 1 point: This section should briefly relay the methodology of each of the reflex tests carried out .
Discussion: 3 points. This is the most important part of the report. Discuss results from both reflex tests carried out. Be sure to cite scientist journals to explain your results. A good source is PUBMED
Conclusion : 0.5 point: This section should contain concluding remarks about the experiments carried out.
References: 1.5 points: This section, usually on a separate page should contain citations used in the discussion. References should be written according to APA guidelines
Formatting: 1 point: This report should be written using APA guidelines. i.e: Double Spaced, Times New Roman 12
