Should everyone go to college

In the recent discussion of success controversial is has been whether everyone should go to college. From this perspective , evidence indicate that people with college education make more money compared to those with a lower level education. On the other hand, however, others argue that , not all college or college degrees are equal. There are other factors ; The cost of college matter as well. The more someone has to pay to attend, the lower the net benefit of attending. Furthermore , we have to factor in the opportunity cost of college, measured as the foregone earnings as a student gives up when he or she leaves or delays entering the entire workforce in order to attend school. In other words of Owen and Sawhill , one of this views main proponents “by telling young people that they should go to college no matter what , we are actually doing them a disservice.

According to this view , one way to estimate the value of education is to looks at the increase in earnings associated with an additional year of schooling. In sum then , the issue is whether college education adds more value or is it the same for people with lower education. For certain schools, major occupations , and individuals , college may not be a smart investment. The main problem is that , if the smartest , most motivated people are both more likely to go to college and are more likely to be financially successful. Then the observed difference in earnings by years of education doesn’t measure the true effect of college.

My own view is that a college education is important , as long as you are comfortable and can effort it just go for it. Though i concede that college does not determine ones future, i still maintain that one should further their education. For example, back home i didn’t want to go to college but regretted it in the long run when my grand father fell ill , but i used my grit and made sure i followed through with my goal and it helped me to be where i am today. Although some might object that is it a waste of time and money , i would say that is is challenging but with the right help determination and resources it will definitely be worth it in the end. The issue is important because , with college education , one will have a better grasp and concept of life and certain choices and a good knowledge on how to become more successful with everything in life you want to achieve.
