ANALYSIS FOR ORAL INTERPRETATION PRESENTATIONS
1. WHO? WHO IS SPEAKING?
The narrator is telling the story. We never learn her name, but she appears to be the main character of the story. She is a young woman.
2. TO WHOM?
The narrator is writing in a diary. It would be for herself since no one else allows her to write.
3. ABOUT WHAT? WHAT IS THE BASIC SUBJECT?
She is writing about her current situation in life and her summer in a mansion.
4. WHERE? WHAT IS THE SETTING?
She is in an old colonial mansion. We, the reader, never learn where this mansion is.
5. WHEN? WHAT IS THE TIME PERIOD?
The story takes place in the summer. It is about the middle of the narrator’s life.
6. HOW IS THE SPEAKER SPEAKING? WHAT DOES THE TEXT SAY AND WHAT DO YOU THINK?
She is writing with contempt, wonderment and depression. We learn that she is very depressed. She has contempt for her husband who will not acknowledge that she is ill.
7. WHY IS THE SPEAKER SPEAKING? WHAT IS THE PURPOSE?
She is writing to keep track of her thoughts and her feelings. She has feelings about her husband.
