Daniel Pozo, New York,
to Connor Pozo, Dublin Ireland,
January 5, 1845
I hope the family and yourself are doing well back home in Dublin, amidst all the obstacles facing our people. I will be persuading him to travel to New York and join me as a bare knuckle fighter in order to make a living. The situation back home is dramatically getting worse for our family and it should be our duty to earn as much as we can in order to send for our immediate family to join us. The living situation I am currently in is in no way ideal, I share a room with many other Irish people, but in comparison to the way things are going in Ireland, I must say I can’t complain. I am powered by the desire to raise enough to pay for the voyage of my mother and sisters. The potato famine, failing economy, and discrimination from the English has forced me to leave and do what is best for my family. My life experiences gave me strength and the desire to never give up, which is some of the motivation to become a bare knuckle boxer, along with the payout. Although this was the route I chose to take and the profession I urge my cousin Connor to take, it is not the only option. He could choose to earn money as a miner, railroad worker, or as a day laborer. Railroad work is by far the most dangerous and there is no guarantee he could get picked to work in factories or mills as a day laborer. So naturally I will encourage Connor to work towards improving his fighting skills before sailing to New York in order to prepare him for future rounds to come. America isn’t exactly paradise for us Irish, as we still face heavy discrimination and stereotypes. WASPs are in the forefront of the hate towards our people, to many we are the inferior race, drunks, violent, etc. The neighborhood I live in is filled with only Irish people almost like little towns back home. We choose not to assimilate and instead practice our own religion and live separate from other ethnicities. We have to work hard to survive and the WASPs don’t make it any easier for us. Like I said coming here is a big step towards the ultimate goal of rescuing our family from the troubles in Ireland, but if you manage to win enough fights to earn extra money for yourself then you could find some extra enjoyment. The women here are limited to the jobs they can have, one of which is prostitution and I must say I have spent a portion of my earnings indulging in that guilty pleasure. Of course my mother and sisters will take work in factories or mills or a more domestic style job, anything except prostitution!

Professor feedback: what was the neighborhood in New York called where you live and the conditions, consider describing your journey over, how it was, how you afforded it, and what to caution your family about it in terms of finance. Which stereotype is most relevant to a bare knuckle boxer, be careful to emphasize nobody wanted to be a prostitute, but some had to in order to make ends meet.
