Americanization of the World

Globalization in the modern world is universally acknowledged as an intensification of economic, political, and cultural interaction between organizations, people, and governments of different countries. The advancements that are witnessed in different countries culturally, economically and politically are an example of a globalized world. Additionally, globalization is more than what people imitate from America or what is commonly known as Americanization. Anthony Giddens in his article argues that the imposition of American products, cultural violence, and values that are depicted in movies, media channels among other avenues of cultural exchange, is believed to influence the concept of globalization to some extent (Giddens 15). The current globalization trend has been as a result of a wave of influence sweeping from the global superpower of the United States. This is in terms of politics, economy, cultural dominion, and the technological state of the U.S (Andrew). Furthermore, true American foods and multinationals are witnessed in other countries yet it is the prevalence of some American virtues that help push this company to have a global appeal. However, According to Andrew Lam in his article, some of the things that were viewed as Asian are slowly becoming American. In this case, it is believed that America is not the only country that has influenced other nations, but other countries have also influenced America as well to a great extent (Fareed). Pascal Zakaria, on the other hand, argues that however much the world tends to deny the effect of Americanization, the global world is feeling the American cultural effect. Therefore, it is clear that even when America has influenced so many global countries in terms of culture, policy, and the economy, America has also benefited a lot from the culture, economy and policies of the rest of the countries that it interacts with.

American culture has been reaching to the other parts of the world through Hollywood movies, media channels, television shows, and American multinational companies that are located in different countries. Additionally, in most countries, individuals can rarely distinguish between the American cultural values, American exports, and those that are native or that are local cultural values of a particular country because all these aspects are all wrapped into a phenomenon called globalization (Ishmael). Apparently, this clearly shows how the American culture has played a very big part of globalization. Moreover, countries like China and other Asian countries are benefiting from American multinational companies since the American global companies such as Coca-Cola, the MacDonald’s among others have started outsourcing in this low-cost countries by establishing call centers in them.

However, this outsourcing process has created some confusion among different countries. As such, because America is no longer referred to as ‘a melting pot’ of some culture, people from different cultural backgrounds can freely preserve their local identities and still be classified as Americans. Additionally, according to an article by Yochu Shimemura, the world is slowly losing its heterogeneity of culture, political affiliations, and economy and thus, it is becoming more homogeneous because of the concept of globalization and the spread of the Americanization process (Vicente). Some other scholars such as Andrew Lam believe that, so many people fail when they associate Americanization and globalization because they tend to overlook the fact that, in the age of porous borders, other countries have also influenced America to a great extent. For instance, there are over twenty animation shows of Japanese origin on so many American channels. Additionally, the sales of Japanese DVDs and comic books increased tremendously in the U.S to reach $500m million dollars in just a year’s span of time which is clear evidence that globalization does not necessarily mean Americanization. In fact, Americanization has not only made other countries benefit from their culture, but other countries have also had a lasting impact on the American culture (Peter).

Seemingly, America is no longer the reference point as far as politics, economy, and culture are concerned. According to Fareed Zakaria, the rest of the world has risen to the occasion and are on the verge of overtaking America. For instance, Dubai hosts the world’s tallest building, China has the biggest publicly traded organization, and the largest movies industry is Bollywood. In other words, some years ago, America would have topped the list in all these categories, which is no longer the case (Fareed). Additionally, America’s superpower status remained unchallenged for some decades. However, as of recent, the economies of other countries have also accelerated dramatically. Many countries outside the industrialized West have also been undergoing economic and structural changes at rates that no one could have thought of initially. Moreover, countries no longer depend on American goods since they are making their products and their communication technologies to open up opportunities for growth in other countries as well.

In conclusion, as much as America has influenced the world economically, culturally, and politically, it is no longer a super power owing to the fact that the economies and cultures of other countries have improved tremendously. Some China foods and Asian movies, books and other global materials are also purchased in the United States. In other words, America has also benefited more from the culture and the economy of other countries. The concept of globalization in the modern century does not only refer to the Americanization process, but it also encompasses the planetary values that America has also embraced from the rest of the world.
