Introduction
In the whole world, the united states have the highest gun per capita number. Around 22% of all Americans possess' guns, that approximately 34% men and 11% women. The GCA of 1968 regulates guns at the federal level. That suggests a legal resident or citizen must be over the age of 18in order to purchase a firearm and ammunition. Other guns can be sold to persons above the age of 21. December 2012 children in an elementary school were on the receiving end of gun violence, reporting the incidence, the media called for action as a member of the public expressed it. Statistics show that gun violence in African America communities has had a tremendous impact collectively, as more children die annually because of gun violence. After the shooting in el Paso and Dayton, president trump said he was favoring backgrounding checks. The former vice president was in line with the ban of an assault weapon and suggested smart guns that would block accidental firing unless the owner pulled the trigger. Biden opposed gun licensing. The gun policy is one fundamental aspect that should be reviewed to safeguard the public and reduce cases of homicide related to firearms.
The historical and constitutional basis of America and how it relates to the policy
Mass shooting in the united stated in recent years has continued to fuel the debate on what can be done to stop such cases. Through the united states' history, amendments have never been discussed. The second amendment passed way back in the Congress in September 1789 and corrected in 1971 was marked in different political setting from the one that we currently have (Filindra et al. 2016).
In the past, the united states had no standing army. Instead group of men through the united states came together and formed small militia groups that had their weapons and they were paid, besides receiving some training. However, weal links were evident, as it was clear the militia were not enough during US revolutionary war, for they were not able to deal with foes from the British empire.
Anti-federalist played a crucial role in the proposing of the 12 amendments to the constitution that put down citizen rights in which ten were corrected in 1971 that includes the second amendment.
Checks and balances
Rights to own guns should be protected, besides setting strict regulation concerning gun ownership. In Massachusetts, those planning to own a firearm must obtain a license. To get the license one has to submit to background checking and training. The permit also proves more information on the person who is planning to obtain the firearms (Devi, (2016).
Under federal legislation, one is prohibited from owning a firearm if they have been sentenced to a crime punishable by imprisonment for more than two years. This has led to many convicted not to obtain, or lose an FID card, and also, the right to own a firearm in the united states (Celinska, 2007).
How the media and public policy portray the policy
The media plays a role in guns and guns control. Regular airing of crime drama, films and crime new can affect the consumers that are the target. A regular viewer of chows that involve firearms is likely to go against gun control measures for they think guns prevent crime. Those that access crime accounts from magazines and newspapers are also more believed to differ, thus making it effortless to hide guns (Parham-Payne, 2014).
Policy impact on the election process
It has been over a decade since Congress passed the legislation over gun control. Deaths associated with death were at a peak in 2017, over time, this was the highest recorded in decades. As a result, voted all over the united states called for actions from the lawmakers. Voters from both parties agree that the gun law should be stricter (Barry et al. 2019). Democrats are suggesting and agreeing that weapons that hold a high capacity magazine, that is more than ten rounds of ammunition should be banned. On the other side, the Grand old party have different ideas. President Trump, on the other side, supports the concept of school teachers having firearms in schools, besides giving the state power to control gun laws, a mandate meant for the federal.
Conclusion
Majority of American own guns but want the policies amended but preserve their second amendment rights. Lives have been lost; the mass shooting has been an order if the day. Since the second amendment in 1971, its high time they should be revised, the media is at the centre stage of gun policies and control as voters are demanding for the polices to be amended, which will affect the candidate's position, depending on the systems that they are revising.
