College will be a very important milestone in your lives. In my opinion, the best time of your life will be this period. This is your opportunity to establish grounds and seek majors that will suit your career paths. Before coming to college, I was thinking and picturing on how I would adjust to the way of life, classwork, life with my roommates if I had one and social life. After joining, I learned that this is not high school, it's a more complex institution that will prompt you to widen your network, adjust to be an independent decision-maker and pursue a desirable path that you can take to change your independent path. For you to build your career, this new phase of your life will require you to optimize every opportunity to learn. My advice to you as you seek to pursue a major of your preference is to choose an area that is flexible in the working environment.
What college life has taught me is that you ought to decide your career advancement at this initial stage before time gets the best of you. To you, the job market and ability to get formal employment may sound many years to come, but time flies, you will soon be graduating from this place than you can even imagine. A study by the Council of Writing Program Administrators (CWPA, 2011) stated that, you will understand that to ensure smooth college life; you ought to persevere and prepare yourself mentally, physically and socially through participating in extra-curricular activities and programs that directly relate to your career life.
It can't be work and no play. The college offers many activities such as theatre, debate, sports, public speeches, music, dance, art, drama and academics. Being involved in these extra-curricular activities attains your personal experience and provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate your talents and abilities. In learning various college departments and programs, always seek professional advice on how you will pursue internship opportunities, part-time jobs and volunteer work that will enable you to develop skills that you need in the future. Network with students to development habits of creativity, flexibility, learning to responsible, open-minded and a good person in general.
Do not compare college courses to high school courses. According to a study by Brown and Sarah (2020), they explained that as a post-high school student you need to relax, spread your study time and allocate time prudently for each unit to avoid frustration, discouragement, stress and anxiety that will affect your general academic performance. Learn how to plan and schedule to avoid being overwhelmed mentally. Spread and organize your tasks and even have a little on weekends when you are free. It would be best if you learned to treat school like the way you would have treated your job. Expand your knowledge by joining discussion groups and going to the library. Optimize all the career sources from the college that will guide you to be professional. You can learn how to write cover letters, resumes, interviewing tactics used by employers; this will be essential for your life after graduating.
In conclusion, joining a college is a lifetime experience which can be beneficial when you choose to do the right thing and be with the right people at the right time. Avoid bad company that will subject you to make bad decisions. Have self-control and discipline, they will guide you to make rational decisions that will make your life worthwhile. I believe you should start progressing now, every one of you should start planning early to avoid lifetime regrets.
