Amazon.com, Inc. is an internet consumer-shopping site that offers millions of new, used, refurbished and collectible items in categories such as books, movies, music and games, electronics and computers, home and garden, toys, children’s goods, grocery, apparel and jewelry, health and beauty, sports, outdoors, digital downloads, tools and auto and industrial. The company, which serves more than 50 million members, operates in three segments: North America (which generates about 60% of annual revenue), international (33%) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) (7%), which offers computing, storage, database and other service offerings globally for start-ups, enterprises, government agencies and academic institutions. The Amazon Marketplace and Merchants programs allow third parties to integrate their products on Amazon websites and provide related fulfillment and advertising services to third-party merchants; allow customers to shop for products owned by third parties using Amazon’s features and technologies; and enable customers to complete transactions that include multiple sellers in a single checkout process. Amazon Prime memberships afford members a host of perks including free two- day shipping, streaming music and video, delivery from participating restaurants and much more. The company also sells proprietary electronic devices, including eReaders, tablets, TVs and phones; as well as the Echo personal digital assistant. The firm serves authors and independent publishers with Kindle Direct Publishing, an online platform that lets independent authors and publishers choose a 70% royalty option and make their books available in the Kindle Store. Subsidiary Whole Foods Market is a supermarket chain featuring foods without artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, sweeteners and hydrogenated fats, with stores throughout the U.S and internationally. During 2018, Amazon opened Amazon Go stores, the first in Seattle, which uses cameras and sensors to detect items that a shopper purchases. The firm plans to open as many as 3,000 Amazon Go locations throughout the U.S. by 2021.
