Introduction
Correlation is the measure of the extent to which a change in one variable affects a change in another variable. This exercise investigates whether there exists a linear relationship between magnitude and the depth of an earthquake.
This inquiry is based on a dataset containing magnitude and depth of the earthquake for 50 cases. Therefore, the are two attributes and two rows.
Scatterplot
This figure indicates that there exists a weak positive correlation between magnitude and depth.

Value of r
Value of correlation r = .0231
Critical value at alpha = .05 ( two tailed) = 2.57
Significance
There is no significant correlation between magnitude and depth (p> .05)
r =0.023100158
n =50
T Statistic 0.160085307
df 48
P value 0.873485665
Regression equation
Regression equation: depth = .1933Magnitude + 9.4225
Slope : .1933
Y intercept : 9.4225
Good Fit or Not
The equation is not a good fit for the model. This is because the points do not appear to be closer to the line of fit. Again, the value of R square is closer to 0.
Summary
This study investigated the correlation between magnitude and the depth of an earthquake.
The correlation coefficient was found to be .0231, which is weak and positive.
This correlation is insignificant since p > .05, thus no significant association.
