Aligning Standards and Learning Objectives
Part 1: Lesson Plan Analysis
1. What is the academic standard?
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.7 Use the information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate an understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur).
2. What is the learning objective?
By the end of the lesson, students will explain how illustrations are useful when making sense of a text, and how they give meaning to the text. Students will use the pictures and words in the text to show understanding of the material with 80% accuracy.
3. Are the standard and objective aligned? How do you know? Provide a rationale.
Yes, the standard and objective are aligned. I know this because they both aim at achieving the same things. The standard requires that the students use the information learned from the illustrations to show their understanding of the text. The objective states that the students should be able to use the illustrations to get the meaning of a text. These two are connected in what they want the students to achieve by the end of the lesson. They also can both be used to assess whether the goal has been achieved or not at the end of the learning duration. The teacher has ensured proper alignment of the lesson, which guides and supports the learners as well as the teacher to constantly reflect on the learning objectives (BeaconLC, 2020). Therefore, the standard and objective are in alignment.
4. What is the lesson about? What does this lesson cover?
The lesson is about reading informational text. It focuses on the students reading the text, A Medieval Feast by Aliki, and demonstrating an understanding of the text using pictures, drawings, words, or maps. The lesson covers many learning activities, including group collaboration, while utilizing materials such as vocabulary sheets, SMART boards, internet, chart papers, and markers to aid the lesson. Power Point pictures are also viewed of the medieval period to relate more with the text. Teaching learners the use of graphic organizers, academic language function, and inquiring information as well as linking information gained from these illustrations with information found in the text.
5. Do the assessments effectively measure the academic standard and learning objective? Justify your response.
Yes, the assessments effectively measure the academic standard and the learning objective. The teacher carries out a pre-assessment at the beginning of the lesson by asking them what they know about medieval times. This tests the prior knowledge they have regarding the lesson at hand. Questions being asked in between the lesson assess the students’ understanding of the illustrations, observations used and how these connect to the meaning of the text. Creating lists of vocabulary words based on the illustrations and context clues also assesses their knowledge retention. These assessments align with the standard by testing the knowledge required for the achievement of the objective at the end of the lesson.
Part 2: Unwrapping the Standards

Grade Level: 2nd grade Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) https://tea.texas.gov/academics/curriculum-standards/teks/texas-essential-knowledge-and-skills |

KNOW Objective The students will know the different values of coins to help them solve monetary transactions and to understand how these transactions are made. The students will also know how to answer questions related to the value of coins and the different uses of coin symbols. State standard aligns with the objective by allowing students to gain knowledge of coins and how they are valued. This knowledge allows the students to carry out monetary transactions and understand how they work, aligning with the expectations of the standards. The objective is aligned to the standard because it emphasizes the importance of solving monetary problems using mathematics. |
|
UNDERSTAND Objective The students will understand that coins have different values and how to make meaningful transactions using money. Students will also understand how to use the decimal symbol, the dollar sign, or the cent symbol to identify the value of coins through mathematical applications. The objective aligns with the set standard because it helps the students understand how mathematics applies in the transaction of money. The students will understand the different symbols that are used and the value of the dollar. Through the alignment with standards, the students are also able to link learning to living as the lesson provides relevance to their lives (Draud & Spugnardi, 2008). |
|
DO Objective The students will be able to apply mathematical strategies to process standards in determining the value of a collection of coins up to one dollar and help them solve monetary transactions (TEKS, 2020). Students will be able to use their understanding of coins, symbols, and their values to ask and answer questions and participate in activities that enhance their understanding of using math to solve money transactions.
The objective allows the students to apply mathematical standards that align with the set standards to determine the value of the coins up to one dollar (TEKS, 2020). The students are also able to answer any questions that may be asked about the value of one dollar. State standards alignment with the objective allows the students to gain adequate knowledge that is required to progress to the next grade. |
|
Lesson Summary: The focus of this lesson is to learn to apply mathematical standards to make money transactions. The students will collect coins to determine their values using mathematical calculations. Students are expected to add up these calculations to the value of a dollar and understand how to carry out monetary transactions even in real life. They are also expected to answer simple questions that pertain to the value of a collection of money to demonstrate their understanding. |
