Interprofessional Organizational and Systems Leadership
A leader influences, guides, directs, opinions and course of action, and leadership style is the manner and approach of providing direction (Marquis & Huston, 2012). leadership is considerate, democratic, consultative, participative, employee-centered, concerned with people, maintaining good working relations, supportive and oriented toward facilitating interaction, relationship-oriented, and oriented toward group decision-making (Cherry, 2014). Leadership in nursing plays a vital role in healthcare, and how it is practiced can tremendously impact the organization as a whole (Marshall & Broome, 2017). Personal leadership philosophies represent individuals and are unique and particular to each individual. According to Schmidt (2015), men in nursing share common professional core values such as empathy, compassion, teamwork, respect, and others.
According to Gallup Strengths Finder (2020), "by focusing on your Signature themes, separately and in combination, you can identify your talents, build them into strengths, and enjoy personal and career success through consistent, near-perfect performance" (p. 2). Upon completing the strengths finder Assessment, my assessment results are Relator, Activator, Restorative, empathy, and Developer.
Core Values
Two core values that I identified the most with were Empathy and Restorative. With empathy, I can sense the emotions of those around me. I am primarily concerned about the welfare of others. I can perceive others' pains and feelings. This has greatly enhanced my duty as a nurse to take care of my patients effectively. Like I often tell my colleagues, "this could be me; this patient could be my mother or father'"..., As a restorator, my greatest joy is the ability to propound a solution. I love solving problems. I enjoy breaking the riddles and fixing the puzzles. Yes, I fixed it, resuscitated it, and rekindled its vitality.
Strengths
Two of my strengths that I would like to improve are being a Developer and Activator. Wisser and Massey (2019) describe effective leaders as "demonstrating self-awareness, transparency, openness to feedback and diverse opinions, ability to analyze information objectively, and a propensity to listen to those who have opposing views" (p. 123). As a "developer," I see the potential in others and thrive on helping them succeed (Gallup, 2018). However, my approach can sometimes need to be more timely. As much as I desire the growth of others, I often tend to expect that change overnight. As an activator, I am impatient. I believe in action, How to get things done. I have all things planned out. Plan A, B, C, and D. I quickly switch to the next plan if the previous one is not working. There is a need to be patient and analyze why a previous plan is not working.
Characteristics
The two characteristics I would like to strengthen are my ability to communicate effectively with others and my self-confidence. Over the years, I have seen a gap in my effective communication with others, and there is a need to bridge that gap. A good leader must communicate effectively and pass the message across.
