Slavery and Reconstruction
After the civil war, reconstruction was aimed at ensuring that the lives of the citizens returned to normalcy and in addition, the issues of inequity were addressed where slavery was abolished and other issues that affected equality among all the members of the society was solved. But this progress did not last long because not all supported the idea of equality to all the citizens. One of those who were against reconstruction is Jim Crow who ensured that all the progress that has been made in making the nation a democratic on were immediately reversed. Then came the Ku Klux Klan that used intimidation for the people to fear them. They supported slavery and other injustices to the minority groups thus making the efforts that had been put in place during reconstruction to fail. This meant that Americans still had a long way before democracy is achieved and all the citizens being treated equally without discrimination of any race or gender.
What happened during reconstruction where the good leaders who wanted to America to be a better place tried to make the nation favorable to all, but some did not support the idea and hence, they did all that they could to reverse the progress that has been made indicates that for a thing to be achieved, then it should be supported by all. Reconstruction therefore did not succeed because some people were against it. Jim Crow and the Ku Klux Klan played a significant role in ensuring that reconstruction was not successful. They wanted slavery to continue something that reconstruction wanted to end and since Ku Klux Klan used lynching among other ways that intimidated members of the public, the reconstruction failed and thus slavery continued. As a result of this, America failed to be a democratic nation and hence, a lot had to be done before democracy was attained.
