The Gilded Age

The point that the writers of this South Park story wanted to pass is that the decisions we make affect our lives and thus before making any decision, then it is important to consider if the decision will have a positive impact to the lives of others and even to those who are making the decision. This point is clear when people in the South Park decide to buy their goods from Wal-Mart, they affect the local business and when they realized that they decided to destroy Wal-Mart and after destroying it they started buying from their local that grew to the size of Wal-Mart, but it got fire and they avoided buying their goods there.

This piece of writing is similar to the satire of Mark Twain in that it explains the point using satire. The satire in this piece of writing is that when Wal-Mart was established, the argument was that since the products are sold cheap, it will be affordable to all and thus members of the public will access what they need since they were cheap. In the process, local businesses have been affected, making local business owners poor, and Wal-Mart should have improved their living standards by selling them cheaply.

This story reflects the society during the gilded age where there was rapid economic growth in America but those who experienced the growth are the upper class thus leading to the increase in the gap between the rich and the poor. In this case therefore, the rich depicted by Wal-Mart and the poor by the local business reflect the situation in the society where the rich becomes richer and the poor becomes poorer.
