Unit 4: Human Organ Systems and Natural Selection (from Wed, 02/17/21 - to Tue, 02/23/21)
Introduction
Welcome to Unit 4! Do you remember when we investigated how important oxygen was for cells in Unit 2? With no oxygen, eukaryotic cells have a hard time making enough adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and they perish. Then, the organism dies, too. This week, we will look at how our cells get that oxygen as we explore human organ systems. The human body has sophisticated systems for balancing oxygen levels. These systems and feedback loops have come about through natural selection, with those traits being selected for depending on environmental conditions. Although it seems counterintuitive that Tibetan highlanders living above 10,000 feet have fewer red blood cells to carry oxygen, this mutation makes their blood more fluid and so the oxygen can get from the blood stream to all of their body’s cells more quickly. Though you may be on the fence of whether or not evolution occurred as described by Darwin, there is no denying that natural selection occurs, and we can see this happening in our lifetimes with the proliferation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. So, we’ll start there. In this unit, you will do the following:
Darwin, C. (1859). Struggle for existence. Origin of species. Retrieved from http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/origin/chapter3.html
