Unit 1: The Science of Biology (from Wed, 01/27/21 - to Tue, 02/02/21)
Introduction
Welcome to Unit 1! Don’t you want to kill the virus that is making your eyes run and your throat sore? Is the cold virus even alive? To ease into your studies of life science, you will start by investigating what it takes to be a living thing. This may seem obvious, but scientists have developed a precise list of characteristics that are used to define life. You will analyze these various traits and determine whether a virus meets these criteria. You can then argue whether or not you can kill it. Like all scientists, biologists follow a series of steps, called the scientific method, to study life functions. Without ethical constraints though, even solid data can be warped, misrepresented, or interpreted with bias. You’ll start this week by looking at an infamous case where the conclusions from a study were overstated and where the scientific method was perhaps not followed to the letter. In this unit, you will do the following:
“Saying 'Gesundheit' doesn't really help the common cold - but it’s about as good as anything the medical profession has prescribed.” (Price and McCarthy, 2018). -Anonymous Follow the step-by-step directions below to successfully complete Unit 1. Set aside time on multiple days throughout the week to focus on completing these tasks before the end of the unit. Remember that developing time management skills is an important part of success in your degree program and will serve you well in your career!
