AI Prompting Strategies for Professional Communication

Audience and Purpose

My audience are early career professionals who have already started using AI tools in an unstimulated way, but have not yet been taught how to use AI prompts with purpose. My goal in this presentation is to demonstrate that treating AI prompting as a communication skill and not a technical skill leads to more professional, faster, and accurate results in the workplace.

Three Audience Questions

1. Why is it important for professional output that you're prompt?

2. What are some specific techniques that can make a prompt more effective?

3. How can such techniques be used in real life situations, such as emails, reports, and presentations in the workplace?

Two Professional Sources

The first is Knoth et al. (2024), a peer-reviewed paper in Computers and Education: Artificial Intelligence which suggests that the quality of prompt-engineering is directly linked to the quality of the AI output; and that there is a learnable skill of structured, literate prompting rather than an innate talent. This is a suitable source because it provides empirical, current (2024) evidence which is directly relevant to my purpose to demonstrate prompting is a teachable communication competency.

The second is Bozkurt's (2024) Open Praxis publication, which discusses prompt engineering as a communication strategy and technical skill, and presents a set of principles (context-setting, specificity, iterative refinement) for designing effective prompts. This source is suitable because it presents the findings of the research in a practical framework that my audience can use in their everyday practice.
