Designing a survey
In designing the survey, it's important to understand the purpose of the assignment. A
person should write specific knowledge that a person would want to gain from the survey. One
should write down hypothetical questions then calculate the expected response. The following tips
should be essential in designing the questions;
Allow the respondent to fill neutral or NA in the response
Compound questions should be avoided
The language used should be simple
Leading questions should not be used
The type of questions and answer styles should be categorized into categorical and ordinal
questions. The ordinal questions should have answers with scales ranging from strongly disagree
or strongly agree. The categorical should have unordered labels such as colors or brand name
Common problems and ways to avoid them in survey questions
Demographic questions- These type of questions should be to the pieces of information
that are vital. On the same note, they should be limited and being placed at the end of the
survey to reduce the annoyance
Inadequate response questions- The response should cover all scenarios but should not be
in a way that would create confusion
Rating scale inconsistencies- it's advisable to use different scales in the same survey, but
the questions should have different scales
Assumption of prior knowledge or understanding- all questions should b examined without
making any assumptions that the respondent will know
Leading questions- questions should avoid directing the responding in answering in a way
that the survey wants
Compound questions- each question should be asked independently
Unnecessary questions- The survey should know what it wants. Asking anything outside
that would cause the survey to fail
Excessive open-ended questions- The number of open-ended questions should be limited
to three or four, which makes it sufficient in reviewing the survey.
Lengthy Surveys- surveys should take little time to avoid wasting time. People will only
accept to take surveys when it takes a short time.
Questionnaire design
Good survey questions should have the following structure
The questions should state the intentions of the research, which will attract people into
answering the questions
The second thing is that the survey question should include instructions in the survey
questions. The instructions should be in how to answer the questions
The other instruction is to avoid asking personal questions unless there is a need to do so
The questions should be short
Questions should be asked one at a time rather than framing different questions in a single
sentence
The questions should not be biased
The questions asked should be easy to answer for the subjects
