Go fly a kite! Wouldn’t you love to do just that? Enough video game controllers. Enough research reports and textbooks and inside air. How about getting out in an open field with nothing but you and a long line and a kite that you can make dance? It’s pretty clear that sure we’re oversaturated with devices and technology. For once, you should be the controller of something as super simple as a sport kite. Think about it. And then go fly it. Just you and the wind and something totally within your control.
Think synchronized swimming in the sky. Yes, a team is involved. And it’s one that you just might want to help us form. The Kite High Fliers. You could be part of the very first competitive kiting club on campus. Imagine piloting a kite 120 feet high, wing-tip to wing-tip with others on the same team. In sync, you all spin the kites 90 degrees in a move called “the blender.” A waver of just six inches would take out a neighboring kite, so you keep total control. And the kite responds. Put your engineering skill and the need to control something other than a computer screen to work with us. You’re cordially invited.
The Kite High Fliers will at first be using something called a sport kite. A sport kite, also known as a stunt kite, is a kite that can be maneuvered in the air. It comes in various shapes, from the traditional triangular (delta) shape with two lines for control, to the W-shaped panel based on the Hadzicki wing, with four lines. Such kites are usually constructed from lightweight ripstop nylon or polyester, with spars made from carbon fiber tubing. The flying lines are braided polyethylene, which is light and does not stretch under tension.
Kite competition is much like that of figure skating, with competitors judged in compulsory figures and interpretation of music. We can compete as individuals, a pair of pilots, or as a team. Team flying is considered the most spectacular, with four pilots flying within centimeters of each other, avoiding disaster while performing figures and formations high in the air.

And just so you know, sport kites and power kites are not out of reach of most student budgets. In addition, if we get approval from the Office of Student Activities, we will be able to apply for student grants to help fund the club, its equipment, and its activities. We’ll be able to purchase dual-line sport kites—those tat are controlled by tye pilot adding ad releasing tension on the right and left lines. Pull on the right hand to turn right, left to turn left, pull equally for straight flight, etc. The pitch is controlled by walking/running forward or backwards, giving different amounts of tension to the lines. Complex tricks and patterns are flown, including turns, loops, and landings. The kite can be flipped and turned end over end, floating gracefully on its front of back, diving at up to 100 km/hour, or nearly motionless. It’s ballet in the sky at high speed.
Quad-line kites are controlled by a pair of handles, with two lines attached to the top and bottom and attached to the kite. A bit more complex than dual-line, all four lines have some tension. Some lines are drawn back more than others. Skilled use of the lines allows a kite to be tilted, rotated, twisted, or pitched in any direction. They are even capable of reverse flight, axis spins, hovers, and side to side flight.
