The University of the State of New York (USNY) is responsible for governance, licensing, and accreditation. The New York State Education Department (NYSED) is the main component of this organization. The Board of Regents is
the governing board that administers and oversees the educational operations of thousands of public and private elementary, secondary, and postsecondary institutions. The Regents are elected by the State Legislature. The commissioner serves as both the president of the group and the heads the state department.
The State University of New York (SUNY) is a university system that operates 32 four-year institutions and 32 community colleges. It is the largest university system in the United States.
The City University of New York (CUNY) operates the 25 public institutions in New York City.
Both university systems are institutional governing boards. Though they have authority over institutions, all educational policies, approval to grant degrees, licensures, and accreditations must be authorized by the USNY and the NYSED.
The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation is the state's financial aid service agency. It provides tuition assistance programs, scholarships, financial awards, and loan forgiveness. It operates under the University of the State of New York (USNY) and the State Education Department (NYSED).
