Age 10 (Middle Childhood) :

 A.  Physical:

1. Child’s height and weight at age 10?

2. Motor skills/abilities

3. Favorite activities and hobbies?

4. Health (injuries, illnesses)

5. Regular physical activity/sports?

 B. Social/emotional

1. Relationship with Family members (how do they interact with parents and siblings?) Do they spend time with extended family members?

2. Identify/Describe the social acceptance category of this child (popular, rejected- aggressive; rejected-withdrawn)

3. Describe this child’s friend?

4. (Bronfenbrenner) What interactions does this child have with other children outside of school? Is this child engaged with the community through religious organizations or service organizations (such as Boy/Girl scouts?)

5. Erikson: How does the child exhibit industry vs. inferiority?

6. How does the child describe himself/herself (self-concept)?

7. Describe the child’s self-esteem at this age. How does social comparison influence this child’s self-esteem?

 C:    Cognitive

1. Does the child have a mastery orientation toward academics? If not, what may have caused this attitude?

2. Describe the child’s attention and memory abilities.

3. Piaget: How does the child exhibit concrete-operational skills? 

4. Vygotsy: how has the child learned skills through interactions with others?

5. What is the child’s level of moral development?

 D.   Apply Freud or other theory.  In this section, you need to apply a theory other than the theories already addressed in this handout.  For example, you could apply Freud, Behaviorism, attachment theory, etc.  You will need to provide examples from your child's life or experiences that illustrate the stages or concepts of this theory.   

(Erikson, Piaget, Vygotsy and Bronfenbrenner are already required for this paper so can't be used for this section.).

E.  Identify 2 challenges/problems the child has experienced during this developmental stage (5- 10 years of age). The issues can be significant but don’t have to be (parent conflict, mean child at school, health problem, etc)
