AET - 311 Lean Manufacturing

Semester Project (Team version)

Lean Manufacturing is actually a very broad concept and embraces extensive tools. The purpose of this

project is to let you explore different tools and find out how the theories learned in the classroom are used

in real-life examples.

The project is designed as a literature review manner, and your group need to browse websites, papers,

and/or other media to finish the assignments presented later in this instruction. Each group will consist of

FOUR students. At the end of this project, each group need to deliver THREE items:

1. An in-class presentation;

2. A PowerPoint for the presentation;

3. A project report.

The details and requirements for these three items are as below.

Project Report (60%)

1. As the first part of your report, list and describe the seven common wastes defined in Lean

Manufacturing. This part needs to be completed collaboratively be the team members. Remember,

you need to give descriptions and/or examples for each waste. Simply listing the names of the

wastes will result in low grade for this part.

2. The figures above summarized some common Lean tools, and you can find more in the House of

Lean in the course lectures. As the second part of your report, each group member needs to pick

up ONE Lean tool and elaborate the following aspects of the tool:

a. Principles (e.g. background, definition, purposes, main ideas, etc.)

b. Benefits and shortcomings

c. Implementation (What need to be done to use this tool? Any constraints or prerequisites?)

d. Two real-life examples found on the Internet (Who, When, Why they used the tool, What

they did, and How it worked). Add at least one related image for each example.

e. The waste(s) reduced by the tool

Notes:

a. An ideal length of each tool is 2-3 pages (1.5 spacing, including images).

b. Use headings to organize your content so the report structure is easy to follow.

3. Add proper references (e.g. for the tool definition, implementation, and the examples you find)

using the APA format. If proper references are not added, the report may be considered as

plagiarism and receive a zero grade.

4. List the individual contribution of each group member.

Presentation and PowerPoint (40%)

1. The presentation is 15 – 20 minutes in length.

2. Each group member should have proper portions of contributions to the presentation and PPT.

3. The presentation and PPT should cover the content in your report, with a focus on the 4 tools

investigated, e.g. their principles, benefits/shortcomings, implementation, real-life examples.

4. Remember to add references properly.
